The only downside to GPS trackers is that if there is no signal like say inside a truck or inside a chopshop you will never find your car again. That's why I decided to go the RF way recently.

I was actually going to build my own GPS tracker but found it's really not the route I wanted to go. If you are interested you can go over to the arduino board and find out all about building one.

  The technology exists, just needs someone to put it in the right package. Like tracking and a regular car alarm tied into my smart/Android phone. Sends me an alarm/text when someone is screwing with my car and trackable with navigation feature on the phone.
..... gives me time to load the gun!

If you had a ham radio license, you could put together a pretty good setup that reports the transmitter location back to your home computer. 

But you would still have the issue of being in an enclosed trailer.

 I have zero doubt the technology exists. I'm sure the military has it. Just a matter of time before the public gets it. .....like GPS at one time.

Military has had it for a long time. Force tracker system. I thought the system created by the auto manufacturers was initially for diagnosing problems caused with thier motor vehicles so they could be adressed but of course some in government see a opportunity for law enforcement and I agree great tool for them,  in the hands of the wrong people could be a royal pain in the arse. Used for traffic violations when no law enforcement is present.  I don,t want a car that issues me tickets and taxes everytime I drive 5 miles over the speed limit.

I guess the enclosed trailer doesn't bother me so much because my cell signal gets through that no problem, in fact it works inside elevators in basements. Having a tracking system that goes to my home computer won't help me track it down as much as one. That goes to my phone or similar small device. Some of the units track them but only give updates every five minutes, what the heck. That only Eli's if it comes to a stop and gets parked. Maybe I am asking too much to have instant updates and tracking like my cell phone or maybe I should by a second phone and leave it hidden in the car.

Posted a response yesterday and it didn't post.

Anyway, without dissuading folks the point of my vanishing post was a layered approach.

1) RFID system to notify when the car moves away from the house/garage
2) GPS system to track the car and it's movements
3) RF system to be the last fail safe device to track the car when all else fails.

This all sounds cool but what would you be willing to pay for it? It would require a monthly fee for the cell link and text features. This type of system would not be hard to put together using existing parts from mouser and allied electronics. The GPS and Text and RFID boards would just need to be intagrated together into one unit. Mass production would bring the cost down but it would cost around $2000.00 and require a monthly fee $?.

I'm no bean counter or expert in electronics but someone should build a system say under $1000 then pitch it to the phone companies as an "app" so the phone company can increase there sales too?  Monthy fee would kill it for me unless it was dirt cheap.
