MY 72 Resto-obsession
« on: December 12, 2012 - 03:05:14 PM »
My restoration started in July 2009. Actually, that's when I purchased the car off of Ebay. I made a bid on the car and nobody was crazy enough to outbid me, so I "won". It's not that I didn't want to win the car, but after driving almost 13 hours and seeing this, I was skeptical. Now to be fair, the car was "as described" and the seller even offered to let me back out of the deal. I agreed to follow through with the purchase, we loaded up the car (located in Massachusetts) and headed back to Michigan. Nobody looked twice at us as we headed north through New York and across the Canadian border.  Things went smoothly until we ghot to Detroit at the border crossing. LOOK OUT. Two hours of convincing the border patrol that this car with no title,on a friends borrowed trailer, attached to another friends diesel pick up, that the car was not stolen. They let us through. Musta figured no one would steal this "pile" anyways.

After sitting on the car for a while, I decided to try to get a title. twenty minutes at the DMV, they said come back in 2 hours. Two hours later, they have me sign a document and tell me "the title will arrive at your door in about 10 days".  :woohoo:

Well. in October 09, I decide it's time to call Dave at Roseville with an order. Both quarter panels, outer wheel houses and the rearmost cross member. Off to pick them up.  :2thumbs:.

After a closer look at the rear floor area, i find out, OH, the rear pans won't fit because the box tubing framerails are too high. And the trunk pan won't fit either. Yep, frame rails too high there too. Oh well, call Dave at Roseville ( anybody see the theme starting) lol. Go to pick up the new frame rails. Good thing Roseville is only an hour away.

By this point it's January 2010 and to date my list of new parts has grown. Yep, hadda call Dave at Roseville again. I had gotten a new tail panel and a trunk pan.
The only original sheet metal on the back of the car was the dutchman panel and the inner wheel houses.

So with the rear quarters fitted properly, I could now remove the doors and work at the front. Time to build a rotisserie.
