Needing a Bell for the 440
« on: December 13, 2012 - 02:23:41 PM »
Greetings All!
In need of a Bell for the 440. Have an 833 4 speed. Prefer the aluminum version (2892513, I think).
Also need a flywheel for this combo. Going into my 72 Challenger. Originally a 340 car.
                     Thanks!

Even call American Powertrain - I think the bell housing that they cast has the 833 and the TKO pattern in it.  Either way it runs about $300.00.

I've got absolutely NO business even comin' across like I'm givin' advice (lookin' for the humble emoticon) but, since we're both close on the low # of posts here, I will share to help you avoid what I recently learned the hard way: be sure you install the correct (4.80") front bearing on your small block trans in order to match up to the larger opeing in the 888513 bell housing (and REMOVE and set aside the incorrect 4.35" front bearing you likely have on the trans last hooked up to the small block.

Otherwise that .045" of slop will cause (in this order and not limited to): hard shifting; worn input nose end; destroyed bushing, leaking front end bearing seal; and eventual internal trans gear / synchro damage.

IIRC, Brewers has all the parts your lookin' for and I'm sure (I am in the exact same boat as you, spoke to wayne at brewers and ordered my 4.80" front bearing, today.

VERY knowledgeable and a great guy (he just don't talk as much as I do).

The very best o' success to you!

SLSC98:
Thanks for that "GOOD TO KNOW" techy tidbit of info on the crossover issues. Seems there is always that
gremlin lookin little butt-head right in the middle of the mix when we go to changing power plants and drive trains....

I have purchased the mod'd mounts from Mancini for the 440. It is a Chrysler TNT 440 Virgin variant and factory original,
so plenty of heft and low end gutz! Also have the heavier Torsion bars for that extra weight.

The 833 is a stone crusher and in pretty good shape. Not racing. Occasional burn out for the crowd at the drive in and
show parking lot. Just a heavy cruiser, with a pair between its legs!

Issue still in limbo is the drive shaft. I am not sure if the length is a problem?

Just as a side. have a 42 Dodge pickup and just bought a Red Ram Hemi, 241 with 270 heads for looks and noise.
THAT WILL BE MY MAIN RIDE!!!!     :rebel:

what trans was in the car before ? 904 uses a longer driveshaft & smaller slip yolk , 727 is a direct fit with the 833

Wow! And, whoa. . .  the wrapping paper was "just the touch"!

And, MLStuder, when you call Wayne at Brewers, be sure to let him know you need the big outside diameter BUT to  go on the small (1" dia) input shaft. The bolt hole pattern on the two front bearings are different.

More stuff a polite person won't ask, "Hey Thor, howdya find out hat lil' tidbit of info?"
