I believe in heaven, and I believe in a merciful God. I would bet that if you offered each of those kids the opportunity to stay where they are or return to their families, every one of them would say "I'm staying here!"

So what would compel an individual to do this, or fly a plane into a building, blow up a bus in Tel Aviv, or commit genocide? Attach whatever label you want to these people- religious fanatics, mentally ill, but I suspect the underlying cause is deeper and more sinister than most people's worldviews allows them to acknowledge.

It is my contention that evil often inspires, empowers, encourages and enables these acts. When I say evil, I refer to a created  entity that burns with an incomprehensible hatred for all things good, pure and innocent. I totally understand why many people would not to chose to go there, because it ultimately ends with an individuals accountability before He who stands in stark opposition to the perpetrator of these deeds.

This happened at my sons school on Dec 3rd and the principal sent a letter out today saying it was no big deal. Newton is an example of when it is "no big deal". my heart goes out to all those affected.

The bigger problems are further reaching than simply guns and their availability, but rather the human pyschie and our societies as a whole.

Granted, the US has a lot of firearms, but there are other countries that also have large percentages of guns per capita that do not have the same level of gun crime as the US. Similarly, there are countries out there with fewer guns per capita that have higher gun crime rates than the US. So the mere presence of a gun does not seem to encourage nor discourage acts of violence.

As a parent, I can't wrap my head around situations like this one in Connecticut, or Virgina, or Colorado, and I cannot begin to understand the anguish the families of those victims must feel. Despite this, there is not a one size fits all, simple answer to this issue. Unfortuantly, I fear this is what many people out there  will be clamoring for.

This tragedy is heartbreaking, especially just before Xmas.   :'(  I had a teenage niece pass away last summer from cancer and my sister has been a basketcase ever since, so I know firsthand how devastating this will be on the families of the children who were senselessly murdered Friday.
I hope that this incident and others like the Aurora theater and Virginia Tech massacre will make us think more about mental illness and what is causing these disturbed individuals to cause such carnage.
I am saddened to see these grandstanding and self serving politicians already taking advantage of this incident to promote their agendas to attack gun owners.  Can't you vultures even wait until the bodies are cold until you call your press conferences??
The assault weapon issue is phony.  If you look up the "assault weapon ban" enacted in 1994, you will see that they couldn't actually define what an "assault weapon" is.  Basically it is a semi automatic weapon with a military like appearance.  Take the action and barrel of a semi automatic, put a nice blued finish on it and install it in a nice finished wood stock and it's a fine acceptable hunting or target rifle.  Put a parkerized finish on the action and barrel, install it in a black nylon stock, and it's now a evil assault weapon with no legitimate purpose they say.
An analogy to cars would be if there were a few high profile incidents involving street racing or high speed chases that ended up in accidents, maybe some street racers ran into a bus stop or crashed into a bus and some kids die.
So some grandstanding politicians invent an emotionally charged term, how about "baby killing hot rods", hold a press conference standing in front of a red Corvette, crying crocodile tears as they proclaim "you don't need a car like this to go to church on Sunday or pick up groceries, the only purpose of a car like this is to race on the streets and endanger the lives of innocent children!!!"
They can't define exactly what a "baby killing hot rod" is, so they enact legislation that bans specific cars, Corvettes, Vipers, Ferraris, GT500's.  Of course, those inclined to street race, will still do it in any car they happen to own.  Nothing really changes safety wise, but these self serving politicians convince the gullible they are really committed to saving us poor souls from evil racers and the evil greedy corporations that built these dangerous baby killing cars. In the end, responsible enthusiasts are the only ones who suffer and are persecuted and we aren't any safer than we were before.
Guns don't make people kill people, no person walks past a gun store and suddenly thinks, "hey, that is a cool looking gun in the window, if I bought that gun, I could go out and kill a bunch of people!".  The gun doesn't create evil, it's just a tool.  So we need to focus on finding the causes not the tools. Mental illness is the main issue that needs to be addressed here, I don't know the answer.  I don't know that reopening all the mental hospitals that used to house so many mentally ill is the answer, but with all the people that would have been institutionalized in the past out among us now, it creates a danger when some of them "snap" and what can be done to protect us?

I cannot watch the news for a couple days . . . all I seem to do is cry when that situation is discussed.  I just cannot put my head around this . . . .

While out working today I drove past an elementary school and a class ( grade 1-2?)was out walking holding a rope on the sidewalk. Usually I wouldn't think twice but just about cried when thinking about what happened and how the families and first responders etc... must be feeling.
I agree I can't watch TV for awhile..... makes me too upset...   :walkaway:

Actually I've usually been avoiding this post too.

This line of reasoning has already been pushed as an agenda item by many municipalities and they use it to confisctate cars and imprison drivers.

Agreed. Since my kids are only 8 and 10, this hits too close for my comfort level and the tv has been off in my house more in the past 5 days than any time I can remember. Kudos to my little ones for not letting it bog them down. We talked about it some, they provided their insight, they've moved on and life is mostly unchanged in their view right now. Fortunatly, our distance from the event and limited tv exposure gives us that luxury.

When I grew up and went to school, almost every pickup had a rifle rack and a couple of rifles in them. I remember teachers going out and wanting to see some of the rifles, and admiring them. I actually own a .22 rifle that was my grandfathers. he had a mechanical pencil at the time, and traded a kid at his school for the .22. He used it to hunt squirrels and rabbits before and after school to supplement food at home. Yeah. We took guns to school. And we never had a school shooting. High powered deer rifles High capacity things

The S.J.S.U. was a false alarm/hoax call in supposedly.
However there was a shooting on Hwy 85. I was in that area earlier today.

Someone shot at a Marine Corp in uniform in a gov't car.   :swear:
He's O.K.
