Repaired HEMI block, would you worry?
« on: December 15, 2012 - 12:53:48 PM »
A local guy has a 426 MP Hemi block for sale which had a set of roller lifters fail. It's been repaired and all of the lifter bores have been bushed. Should this be considered a sound repair or is it something to stay away from?

cant say I like the way the repair was done  :clueless: If the screws need to hold the bushings in position, they would have to push against the bushing and imo that would result in an oval inside.  Looks like that can be done in a better way though. Might be worth a try if the price is right. I wouldn`t build the engine the way it is now   :2cents:

In circle track racing with a sb it's standard practice to bush the lifter bores. It's done for oil control, if a pushrods were to break and a lifter leave the bore then the engine won,t loose all oil pressure and grenade a 7000 or more rpms . It looks like that block has been welded. I would say the repair is only as good as the quality of the weld and the acuratcy of the machine work for the bushings.
Me.... I'm a little anal and don't trust other people's work generaly and like to do it myself so I know it's done right. Or at the very least thouroughly measure eveything.
Just my two cents....

I suppose they are pressed in then, and not held in place with a screw?  I wouldn`t have a problem with sleeves in there but....

You can see where the lifter bore was broken off and then welded. Yes, bushing lifter bores is common place but
I don't like the screws or incomplete repair of that lifter bore.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Ya I can't think of a real good reason for those srews either? I'm wondering if they are holes drilled right thru the bore and the other side to the oil gallery? ... and the screws are " plugs" for the hole? :dunno:  If so seems like a " Mickey Mouse" way of doing things? If it is to hold in the lifter bushing in position or to keep from spinning, then that's scary!  :22yikes:

Thanks for your input everyone, you've confirmed my gut feeling and I will not be pursuing this further. It's just looks like too much of a kludge
