Dumb Fuel pump question

I hate the way I have to crank my engine to fill up my six pack after letting my car set for a week or two.  The engine fires right up after the carbs are filled.

If I install a low pressure electric fuel pump in-line with my mechanical pump, will the mechanical pump by-pass the fuel so it will prime my carbs?

If it won't, can I install an electric pump in parallel after the mechanical pump and not have it back flow through the mechanical pump?

The idea is to have a cheap electric fuel pump just to fill the carbs before engine start and then shut it off and have the engine run on the mechanical pump.

I am really just kind of thinking out loud.  I may end up just installing a good quality electric fuel pump and regulator.

What are your thoughts?

Was wondering were your gas gos,do you drain it? I had a 440-6pak and the car sat more then anything and didnt have a problem starting it. I would have to change the plugs every year thats about it.Wouldnt the 2 pumps put to much pressure  on the setup?

I am looking at a cheap 6 psi electric pump that I would have a switch just for starting, then turn it off.

Right now if I let the car set a couple of weeks, it takes about 8-10 cranks to get it to fire.  After the first start, the engine will start on the second or third crank.

I'm going thru the same thing since they started adding Ethanol to our fuel.   

I just give it a blast with starting fluid before I try to start it. Usually I'm good to go after the second blast. If I use the car every few days, I have no problems, but let it sit for a couple of weeks, I have a hard time starting it.

I've noticed my float bowls down below the sight glass too when left for a couple of weeks. I guess if you figure on a Holley style carb you have 2 , 1/4" vent tubes so evaporation is to be expected?
I use an electric fuel pump so it's never an issue?

Yeah, I will probably end up just replacing my mechanical fuel pump with an electric fuel pump.  No sense in messing around.  I need to do this right.

Anyone have a recommendation for what fuel pump to use?

I used to have one but it was toooo noisy! Is your pump relatively quiet? If it is, what kind did you buy Brad (which model Mallory)? I had a Carter 20 years ago and I found the whine annoying. So I went back to mechanical.

Ya I hear ya on the noise. I had a Holley pump on my bb Buick and it drove me nuts . The Mallory is much quieter. CP140 says part # 4140 on the box.

I remove the air filter top and prime the front barrels with a tablespoon or so of gas.  She fires up on the first crank.  Otherwise I would be cranking and pumping the pedal for way too long.

I had to do the same thing if mine sat for more than a few days.  It would fire up on the first crank that way, but it just got to be too annoying to have to do that pretty much every time I waned to take it out, so I finally broke down and put in an electric pump.  It is a bit noisy (Holley), but it doesn't bother me, and it fires right up no matter how long it sits.  An added benefit was a smoother idle.

I think the problem varies from car to car.  My father in law has a 69 Bee with a 440-6 and mechanical pump, and it fires right up every time.

I know the electric pump should be back by the gas tank, where exactly did you mount your fuel pump and regulator?

Generally the fuel pump mounts above the diff & the reg under hood on or near the engine
