High zinc oil verses new oil with zinc additive
« on: December 30, 2012 - 01:49:42 PM »
Which is better? Joe Gibbs oil or conventional oil with the zdp additive? Or, are they equal after adding the high zinc?

Exactly.

I'm not sure what is the best way to go, but as long as your oil has sufficient amount of ZDDP, you should be good to go.

I'm using Amsoil, but I don't see why you can't use a modern oil and add  ZDDP to it.

It's a lot cheaper tomdomthe zdp additive with conventional oil. But, I don't want to risk anything.

I am currently using Valvoline vr-1. Spose to have high ZDDP levels.

I read online that the valvoline vr-1 is sn certified, which means that it isn't all it's cracked up to be. Apparently it doesn't have as much ZDDP as everyone thinks. I think ill be switching to the brad penn 15w-40 that everyone's is raving about

I have read through many forums and it seems that Vr-1 10w-30  is not certified as a SM and indeed is high in zinc znd phosphorus and is a heavier oil.

I am not sure what is the best out there as it is a very competitive market and I am sure truths and mistruths are spread around on the internet in the name of competitive marketing.

I understand its not a decision that makes economical sense on oil savings alone, but this is another reason why I'm leaning heavily towards roller cams for both the Roadrunner & Barracuda when I rebuild their engines.  Should be good for a few HP too.  Until then, probably the additive for me, but I'll check out the VR1 oil.  Hadn't heard of that being available locally.

I don't know what to believe any more. I have heard that adding the zddp to conventional oil
isn't as good as the oil with it already. Supposedly the additive doesn't mix as readily. Anyone
else hear of this?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

this is what i use,,,valveoline vr-1 20-50 with the hughes molybdenum additive,,,zinc and phorz,,

Over the past 10 years or so all cam manufacturers have seen an increase in flat tappet cam failures, particularly in the high performance arena. We have spent close to a year researching oils and additives to try and find a product that could eliminate this problem. We have found it! Hughes Engines Extreme Pressure Lubricant is a state of the art additive package that is compatible with standard (mineral based) oils or synthetics. To complement this highly specialized additive package a proven friction modifier, Micron Moly® is further blended into the oil treatment. Micron Moly® is a liquid soluble type of moly that plates to the metal surfaces of the engine. Once plated, the moly forms a long lasting lubricant film which prevents the metal surfaces from coming into contact with each other. By preventing metal to metal contact, damaging frictional wear is eliminated, which leads to less downtime and longer engine life. This additive should be used with all flat tappet camshafts. We suggest using this with your break-in oil and at every oil change. One pint will treat up to 5 quarts of oil.

To order a case of 12 pints at a discounted price order p/n 3690C

Larger orders of 72 pints or more will receive even greater discounts and must be ordered by phone..

Soluble molybdenum carbamate  integrates into your base oil and cannot be filtered out by the oil filter like many other after market additives do.
Why do we sell this particular Extreme Pressure Lube? Simple. Our first priority is to give our cams long life and this product does just that. We are happy to share this technology with others who have flat tappet cams who have had to struggle with this same issue.

Soluble Molybdenum carbamate has been used for 50 years or more in the industrial and H.D. trucking industry. We are offering this product as an oil additive. Hughes Engines Extreme Pressure Oil additive is recommended specifically for flat tappet camshafts in all applications. It can be added to any oil, good or crap. It will not affect catalytic converters. Yes, you can use it with roller cams, too! It is super slippery (slick) so if your rocker, pushrod tips and wrist pins live longer, don't be surprised. With products like this you can expect manufacturer claims of, better mileage, improved fuel mileage and reduced oil consumption, stops global warming, helps you lose weight etc...... All of that is possible, I suppose, but we know it will protect your cam & lifters. That is why we use it and recommend it.

Question, if "Micron Moly® is a liquid soluble type of moly that plates to the metal surfaces of the engine. Once plated, the moly forms a long lasting lubricant film which prevents the metal surfaces from coming into contact with each other."  How does it affect the rings seating on a newly rebuilt engine?  Seems like you need a little friction during the break in for the piston rings to seat properly??

good question,,,iv'e been using it since day 1 and my engine broke in just fine,,i want as little friction as possible in a metal device thats rubs together all day long..just switched to solid roller and will continue using it with the case of additive i just bought..

Stated this a couple of times before, so has CP, but I use diesel oil (such as Shell Rotella 15w-40) and add a bottle of General Motors Engine Oil Supplement in. Cam is going into its 4th year now with no issues. The diesel oil is low detergent and higher zed do for the flat tapper cams still in these motors.

Got a couple questions.  Does anyone have experience using Accel brand oil, sold at Walmart, meets SF requirements and is meant to be used in 1988 and older vehicles?

Has anyone ever wiped cam lobe, say 10k miles after break in?
