8.75 axle housing question
« on: January 01, 2013 - 11:17:34 AM »
This month's project - Replace rear drums with rear discs (wilwood).......in doing so I had to change from stock bearings to "green" type bearings.  Yesterday, I got my replacement bearings from Dr Diff; so I dive in.  After finally getting those pesky oil seals out, I'm inspecting my axle housing bores and I don't like what I see.  But then again, this is the first time I've seen the inside of (any) axle housing.  Need some experienced folks assessment........
First thought - I'm thinking I'm going to have to replace axle housing (wouldn't hassle with machine shop in this area).
Second thought - Car was driven by previous owner many miles without issue, and before I started my restoration, I drove the car probably 100 miles without issue.........no drips, bearings were in good shape, is this just cosmetically bad or detrimental to future bearing reliability?

Pictures actually don't give the best resolution as that of the ole eyeball, but there's deep gouge where outer bearing race would seat, the inner oil seal machined lip is nearly gone in one area...........I'm guessing sometime in past 40 years of car's life, someone had a serious bearing seize/lockup.

That's typical of a hack removing the seal. As long as there are no burrs, smear some silicone around the seal
before you install it and you should be fine. Not the best, but not detrimental either.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I wouldnt junp to scrapping the whole housing, Mine looks the same way! I second what was mentioned just grease it around real good and make sure the outer seal is seated straight and not crooked. If it is blurred real bad you can always position the seal forward or back a little it doesn't have to be all the way back on the lip as long as its straight? Also make sure the rings on the back of the seals are still on there, one of my seals didn't have one and it was causing a bad leak on one side! How bad is the gouge? Ive heard of sleeves to fix stuff like that but have no experience with them

So I ended up taking a dremmel tool with fine sanding drum and cleaned up the housing pretty decently, or so I think.  I will be able to position oil seal off the top of the worst gouge and the bearing outer race seat area doesn't actually end up on any of the gouges after further studying and deep thinking while having some

I'm going to go with what I got and if it gives me trouble, ya'll can  :violin:
