Crate motors? Or engine builders
« on: January 02, 2013 - 10:21:33 PM »
Any recommendation of good company's to deal with? I have dealt with Indy and muscle motors..and I like muscle motors..just wanting to check around and see who is using what now..I was wanting to go with a 6.1 but I'm starting to back away from that and go toward a low deck 451 or 470 fuel injection..any input

I can not afford a crate motor for my car so I am getting a 470 short block done in a town about 160 miles away. good reputation and they are using some good parts, my block for about 2500 balanced. I am saving money for the fact that my block does not need to be decked or align bored. I guess that old wives tale of the 72 230 blockes being good is true! I will have to buy a cam, springs and lifters though.

I would love to do it Al I am just already pinned to the wall on the cost of it all. We are going to move into a house and of course the motor and my Challenger are on the back burner again. Oh and those ready to go heads I bought and had so much trouble getting from that reputable guy on Moparts, yeah the one that got me booted from the site when I was asking around trying to find the guy so I could get my money or the heads? yeah a hodgepodge put together of a buncha junk. the heads have been saved but not before I had to break down the 906's and rob the new valves, new guides some porting and a valve job. guess my gut instinct was right about the guy......hope he chokes on the last penny he got from me.

This is a great question.....who is the most trustworthy? You said you have dealt with Indy before?

I have been dreaming of a 408 stroker for a while now and I keep seeing the Indy ads in the magazines.....seems like around $6,000 is the norm for what I am looking for....

Just dreaming for now I guess.....unless I can find a killer deal or someone who will take spare body parts that I can spare.....ya know...kidneys (I have two).....etc.... LOL

I'm going to try these guys:

http://www.prismracing.com/

They've done very well in Mopar Muscle Magazine's dyno challenges and depending on which I build first I'm going to at least talk to them about rebuilding the Barracuda's 318, or a 340 I've got or a stroker hemi for the Roadrunner.  They seem to know their stuff and aren't real far from you in SC.

When it comes to a builder/machinist, get to know them, ask around about their work quality. A local race track is a good place to start. If they aren't willing to warranty the job, your gonna wanna stay away. Same could be said of crate motors too.

Gen 3 crates are pretty reasonable these days:

http://www.moparperformanceonline.com/p-1256-mopar-61l-hemi-crate-engine-425-horsepower.aspx

However, you'll need a computer and accessories so add another $2k to be complete.  STill not bad and you get EFI to boot!
