transmission help for a new guy

so I recently picked up a 1970 challenger with a 383. guy I got it from said that it had  3000 rpm stall converter in it. now I'm pretty unfamiliar with stall converts and I noticed once it breaks 3000 it has a hard time wanting to go back down to anything under no matter how quickly I slow down. I don't plan to drag the car at any point so can  I pop in a stock torque converter? and is there anyway I can leave the stall converter in and still drive it with out such a high rpm? any insight to this would help. thanks

First off, welcome aboard here.   

This problem of your's sounds strange. I have never heard of a torque converter acting this way. A 3000 RPM torque converter is pretty serious, so I assume there must be tall gears involved in the rear end?

Just off the top of my head, make sure the throttle return spring on the carb is doing it's job. If it's weak, that can cause a higher RPM. Other than that, this does sound like a tranny problem, and that is not my strong point in knowledge.

hello mike and thanks for the welcome, do u suppose if I got a stock torque converter and dropped it in I would be OK? if it did have tall gears would the 727 stock converter be OK running them?

You really really need to know what your combo is.  It may take that loose vert just to idle in gear. But it really sounds like you got more problems, if the car is ideling at 3k. Something stuck, a vacuum leak or something. a 3k stall isnt as big as you think. 513 gears in the rearend is, and will wind that engine up

If you drop in a stock converter & the engine starts making power at say 2500 RPM it will be a dog off the line , you will never spin the tires as the converter will lock before the engine is making power .
 I agree with Mike though you have other problems , below 3000 rpm the converter should uncouple & the trans should have no effect on t he trans

well I have been doing A LOT of research in to stall converters and I now know that it isn't at all sthe converter. as I have been replacing gaskets (valve cover, intake manifold) I discovered something which maybe my problem . now my problem does not exist during any point other than when I am really flooring it. as I looked throughly into my Carb I noticed the my issue is a bracket getting in the way of the throttle cable during a release of my pedal or deceleration. I am hoping to adjust the bracket and with any luck my issue will be resolved. thanks for everything.

Wow, that sounds liek that'd certainly do it!   Hope you have indeed located the source and are able to resolve and fix it, for good. Best o' success!
