Keisler 5 speed conversion for 71 E body

All;  Just placed an order for a 5 speed manual conversion (Keisler) for my 71 Cuda, currently 440 w/727 tranny.   I will keep my auto trans floor console, convert it for the 5 speed shift handle.  Order required a %50 deposit, with a wait of 60 days for delivery (last %50 will be hcraged when delivered), which is fine with me due to cold wx outside, and I can start paying off the cost now on my credit card!

I got a 6% discount, as I purchased a 5 speed conversion in the past for my 4 speed, '68/427 corvette, and was really happy with it

The conversion for my Cuda comes with hydraulic clutch set up, which I will apreciate.  The 5 speed w/o the hyd clutch in my Vette would kick the ass out of my left leg in stop and go traffic!

Ill start posting installation pics/comments when I receive it

What is your rear end?

Few of my friends have this gearbox in their cars.

The only problems seems to be that the overdrive (either it's a .64 or .68)
it's like driving a 6 speed without an 5th

Usualy, the gap between 2 gears should be close to half of the one that preceed them

1st = 3.27
2nd = 1.97 (gap : 1.3)
3rd = 1.34  (gap : 0.63)
4th = 1.00  (gap : 0.34)
5th = 0.68 / .64 (gap : 0.32 / 0.36) where it should have been around 0.18

The gear vendor, for example, offer them at .78, so that's a gap of .22

So the fifth, at .64 or .68 is greatr fro cruising, but if you aim drag racing, you have to calculate properly your rear end to be sure to be able to reach the 1/4 of mile without having to shift in fifth  ;)

I ordered my kit last March, finally got all the parts to assemble it at the end of August. A few missing parts that I just made myself out of frustration. Shifter still is not right. ( Auto -OD kit)

Can you  get a refund ? The hydraulic clutch is terrible , no bleeder system so you have to pump the pedal for about 3 days to bleed the air out as it has to work its way up out of the reservoir , rediculous design , why not have a bleed screw ?

My cummins slave has no bleeder so did my older 80s camaro. The best way to bleed a system like that is to fill up a can full of fluid and pump the rod (by hand) with the unit fully submerged and it will get all the air out in a few pumps. Then just fill the master up and while it's dripping fluid out of the line mount the slave and connect it. It is a messy process but will work. Good luck with your kit I will be going down the 5spd route in a few years but I plan on going with the guy here that has the hurst setup

I am thinking about selling my Keisler Perfect Fit kit I have installed in the Fish. not that I am having problems but like what was said about 5th and 4th being so far apart. I'm going 6 spd. I don't mind cutting metal on my car.

I have had no problems with Keisler or their product. The TKO itself kind of sucks but that is not Keislers fault. Ratio difference in 4th and 5th is stupid and the 2-3 shift notoriously hangs due to their design.

It is a good cruiser box and it can take a good beating as long as you aren't HIGH HP, slicks that HOOK, and have a HEAVY car. 90% of you will probably never drive your car hard enough to destroy the TKO. I probably wouldn't either. I am just one of those who can justify a T56's .50 6th gear with a 3.55 rear. Again, for most people here wouldn't need a .50 overdrive either.

It's a good thing there are so many ways to spend our monies, huh!?

I that point, I do agree a lot,
In europe, most of our tranys are stock
And, when I've decided to go "overdrive" I've read hundred of posts about that
And, to be honest, I'm very glad that I've chose an 727 reinforced + a gear vendor

Hey guys! I'm thinking about the conversion too. I wanted to check something about the hurst setup just before but I couldn't find any mopar kit there. Just Ford and GM. Don't they support mopars anymore?

I have a Kreisler perfect fit kit with the tko 600 5spd
If you guys have any pointers before I start feel free to spill your guts.
I like the tip about the clutch cylinder.

I'm the person that posted for Hurst.  I sell there kits.  Here is the skinny -  Hurst is actually in the process of closing out the Mopar line due to poor sales.  Now - there is nothing wrong with anything here.  Hurst / B&M is a very large companies and if the volume is not there - they pass - and move on.  It's that simple.  I've got a call into the GM for Hurst Drivelines and will feed you the latest.  I know they have kits and are looking to move them at a discounted price.  The last that I was told was 10% off and free shipping in the United States.  This is a shame for our hobby and for me personally since I was involved in the developing the Mopar kits with Classic Motorsports Group (Hurst Driveline Conversions) since 2004.  In my day to day job - I am a supplier to Hurst.  I manufacture roughly 80% of the conversion items for the Mopars kits.  This may go away for a while - but it won't die.

Another alternative is American Powertrain - they are good group of car guys - tell them I sent you and hopefully they won't hang up.  LoL!
