no brake lights
« on: January 10, 2013 - 11:00:10 PM »
Hello all, I purchased a 74 challenger last Dec and now I'm slowly returning it back to its glory days.  Anyway, I'm having an issue with the brake light so I havent been driving it other than around the block.  All my lights work except for the brake lights.  Ive checked all that I could with my wiring diagram.  Also, my dash doesnt light up all all so no dring at night and that basically renders the dimmer switch useless.  Thanks

Do you mean the rear lights do not come on if you press the brake, or do you mean they do not come on under the other conditions that would cause them to light (headlights/parking lights on, hazards, turn signals)?  What about the reverse light do those come on? Dome light? Does the fuel gauge work? Side markers?

If it is just the brake lights not coming on when the pedal is pressed, it's probably the switch.  If none of the above items work, it sounds like an issue with the rear harness. The rear harness connects to the dash harness with a multi-pin connector right behind the kick panel on the drivers side, I would first make sure it's connected and clean the connections as needed.

If some of the above items work, but others don't then it becomes a bit more difficult. The most likely cause would be a bad ground, typically each light has only 1 wire running to it (power) and the casing that the bulb sits in is grounded to the body.  Corrosion is typically the issue here as it will cause a poor ground connection.

One common cause of this is a bad dimmer switch.

About your dash lights, or lack there of...These dimmer switches are apparently prone to opening up through the years. Meaning they measure infinite Ohms on any connections. Also, have you taken the light bar off and replaced the bulbs? The light bar screws into the metal dash frame. That's where it gets it's ground connection.

Right, no brake lights when the pedal is pressed.  I replaced the brake lamp switch already and still nothing.  I checked the harness already and its connected.  Maybe I'll disconnect it and clean it a bit.  Thanks

Did you uses A TEST LIGHT ON THE FUES PANEL FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS?  Did you use a test light on the 2 wires going down that mounts to the brake light switch?  It no power is forn there, then you may have a bad turn signal switch in the column.  Or you have a bad flasher and it is pulled to the on position right now,
