73 Scca Challenger and a DIK in a Miata
« on: January 12, 2013 - 02:12:01 PM »
I was entered in the novice group(learners) at Road America last spring, on a warm sunny day, learning how to drive. &3 built to the Hilt 4 speed challenger, 500 ci, roller cam,Full Hotchkiss suspension package plus Big Brakes on all fours, My car is no slowtch!

After my first 25 minute session I went to the mandatory drivers meeting. There was a guy that looked  and acted like Richard Simmons that drove a rollcaged  120hp Miata.
He proceded to take myself and another guy in a new vette to task for passing him in the straights, being all over the track, and not letting him buy in the corners
He had some valid points and they were initially noted because the class is NOVICE(beginners)
But the guy kept going on and berating us, like he was Mario effing Andretti. I told him I got it and if he was that good he should step up a class w his effing Miata. The guy in the Vette told him to Shut up and that he paid for the whole track and he was driving every inch of it.

What I did,
I UNCORKED MY HEADMANS and limped up to the starting line, mufflers are a rule, so i shut her off till the start flag, (snicker, snicker) I let the miata get around me and followed him until the 1.4 mile straight.

I went around him 1/2 way down the staight, BB uncorked, 6000 rpm , 150mph :clapping:
He was topping out at about 90mph, My car sucked the stick right out of his asss!
Then i let him pass me and proceded to do this 2 more times, Heee, Heee
When the session was over he came to my pit and started ***** and i told him my name was Smellinrubber, 6ft 3, 250 and next he would be Smellin my FIST!!!  (
Well thats my story and with the addition of the pit incident I felt Like a real RACER!!
The whole day was an incredible adrenlin rush.  :jumping:

I love crushing Miatas ,they handle well but have no power ,and yea grinding by them with a loud v8 is the bomb ,it has to rattle their eardrums.

I highly recommend getting a camera like a go pro it will help you improve your skills and show off too

look for the Miata in the end  :2thumbs:

I LOVE YOUR VIDEO

Yes , I do have a Camera drewcrane!!!  got it for christmasI will use it in April for the first time.
I still have lots of trouble  driving the line and braking points. WAY HARDER THAN IT LOOKS!!!
The Video will be a bit embarasing because i slide around quit a bit, trying to get my car dialed in.
I upgraded from Kumho performance tires to Nitto Track tires, Kumho's would get hot and get greasy

Where can i learn about your car?

Yeah, I just discovered yesterday that my photobucket account is all different now.  I liked the old way.  >:(

Yeah, want to see pics of your car!  :grinyes:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Pic #2 and 3 of my ARII 1/24 scale model car

Phil in New England-Massachusetts  Always thank God for what you have!

I used to track my Miata a lot before I got the cuda. It's a real momentum car so if you have to stand on the brakes going into a corner b/c the car in front is a whale through the twisties (ask me about sharing space on the track at Laguna with a Cadillac) then your whole lap gets slower and slower until you may as well be in a parking lot.

I dueled it out with a novice viper and he would give me space under breaking into the corner so i could grip through ahead and then he would blow by on the straight again, it was fun. None of this should be an issue if we are all adults who respect each others space and right to have some fun with whatever they brought to the track.

I would hate for track staff to look at the mopar guys the same way they do the honda and evo kids remember not to break track rules about sound that's why a lot of tracks have issues with the neighbors.

Tires are everything ,and the more time you spend on a track the more you will find out what suits you best I have a mate with an Amx and he slides al over the place but manages to do very well so it all depends on the driver and car
Yea I have been a road course track rat since 1980 ,the one term used alot is "smooth means fast".

My car is some what modified ,440 ally heads,Tubular UCAS,reinforced LCAS AND Kframe,4 wheel wilwoods , 17x8 wheels 4 inch BS, 275/45  falkins good well balanced car good fro the road as well as the track

And try this program Infranview for resizing, works great and easy

I get your point Surfmicheals! I do , but these are KILL STORIES and if would have gone and got the Miata guy a "Pick me up Bouquet" it would not have been a good  KILL story?
The driver just kept on and on and on after I acknoweledged the critique and wouldn't quit. I obviously dn't care what other people drive  cuz my old challenger is OLD as compared to the Vipers, GSR's 963's, Race Mustangs, New Vettes.Cadillacs(fast)  plus lots of people have Semi haulers as compared to my Rental Max trailer..

All though it is fun to get their goat ,over the years I have learned that good manners and playing by the rules will not only get you invited back ( the local shelby, mustang, and cobra club SECCA rents the track and are more than willing to bump other moderns car just to have some vintage competition),but earn their respect ,as they probably told you in the drivers meetings ,there are some very fast cars out there with some very inexperienced drivers out there.

Most of all have fun and be  safe
