Rallye gauge cluster
« on: March 08, 2005 - 05:57:26 PM »
Yeehaa!! Got my rebuilt, refinished rallye gauge cluster back today from Redline Gauges in California. Looks thoroughly brand new! They did a really nice and professional job of re-doing the  tired, worn-out cluster that I sent them. I'm totally psyched for getting that installed in my Challenger.
I can hardly wait!

Hey 70RT, your gauges look excellent!  But, when I was looking at them, something struck me as different then mine.  Check out the differences in our tachs. I'm not sure which one is right  :dontknow:  We had ours done by Auto Instruments.

That cluster is awesome!!!  :D

I have to agree with REV, the RPM's are not correct.  :-[ :-\ The redline starts from 6-1/2,000rpm.

Looks awesome though mate.  ;)

Ya what's with that? I'll tell ya what, I'll trade you my old ones and 20 dollars cash.
Just kidding - they do look great.
If I may ask both you and Rev, unless it's too personal, what did the "rebuild" cost.
Did they polish the glass ( lenses ) and fix any broken gauges or what?
If you don't want to say, just tell me to buzz off. Thanks.

You can have as much, or as little work done to your gauges when you send them out. To give you an idea... I had my 70 gauges done. The speedo was on life support it was so bad. The clock had a quartz conversion done. I also had the lens polished, and the needles on the gauges painted, and the clock reset cable fixed. The decals looked good, so I left them alone. The cost was between $600-700. I had it done at performancecargraphics.com

yep, Mike's right. All depends on what you have done.  Still curious about the differences in the redline area.   :dontknow:

 Yeah Rev,
Me too. That looks kind of funny with the redline starting at 5500 RPM. It's nit-picky though. Glad you are happy 70RTdroptop.

Hey, Rev-it-up, that is kind of weird, that difference in the tach coloring. I looked at the one that is currently in the car now ( a '72 -'74 tach ), but either it's faded over the years, or there was just the white and yellow colors on the tach. I never really noticed the coloring on the gauges that I sent out for repair ( maybe I should have! ).You and NZ440 RT are probably right, but at this stage of the game, I'm not going to quibble over such a relatively minor detail. All in all, I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the work that was done. I'll still be smiling when that new gauge cluster gets put in! As far as the cost goes, I paid $ 515.00 for the repairs. That included fixing and updating the tach, converting the clock over to quartz mechanism, repairing and recalibrating the speedometer, painting the needles, fixing the remote resets for the trip odometer and clock,  polishing the lens faces, and generally cleaning up the whole unit. All in all, I'd say I got my money's worth.

Yep!  It looks great and Redline Gauges has a great reputation so they should last a long time.  It will look even better installed!

Beautiful.

I just wish someone would repop the '70-'71 clock reset cable and the speedo reset shaft.

J&J had the latter on e-bag, but I couldn't bring myself to pay $80.00 for it! :gripe:

:iagree:  well not being into mopar long, i probably have no say in this one but,  it may be for a big block cause lthey can't rev as high as small blocks.  scince we're on the subject,  i noticed that some tachs are 8k and others are 7k.  I always figured the 8k was for small block and 7k was for big block.  some people say that the different rpm is on seperate years

sorry for highjackin the thread,  just don't understand the whole tach thing  :outtahere:

BTW,  aprils tach is 8k and redlines at 6500

If you're satisfied 70RTdroptop, that's what counts. For the record, my A36 coded 70RT/SE (440) is identical to Rev-It-Up's and my 73 Rallye (340) is the same yellowish orange with no red starting at 5500 and through to 7000 where the gauge ends. Maybe the 70-72 340 tachometers were 8k? And of course the 318 equipped Rallye cars may be the same as 340 cars in '73-'74. My first '73 Rallye (318) only went to 7k although i can't recall the exact coloring :dontknow:
That does seem steep ragtopchally :iagree:

After all the comments I received about the redline on my gauge cluster, I got curious and called up Redline Gauge Works . I talked to Shannon over there, and he told me that my tach was redone as it originally appeared, with the redline starting at 5500. Also told me that Redline does all the work for Restorations by Julius, and Julius said that even on some numbers-matching cars, the tachs came through with different redlines, some at 5500, some at 6500, didn't seem to matter if the car was a 340 or 440. According to Julius, whatever tach was on the shelf when the cars were built got used, no real rhyme or reason to it.  Looks like Ma MOPAR liked to do some weird things from time to time. Anyway, I'm leaving the tach as is ( still looks kicka** ! )
