Cowl scoop or snorkle style scoop on a 72 Fish?
« on: January 25, 2013 - 11:09:39 AM »
So, just getting around to thinking some more about adding a scoop to the flat hood I picked up at Carlisle last summer.

I am considering three styles -  6 pack style,  Chally T/A fiberglass style and cowl.

Needs to be bolt on.

While I love the look of the Chally T/A style scoop, I do drive in rain sometimes and wondering if that forward facing scoop will be an issue.

Then I thought, what a bout a bolt on cowl-style scoop?  I would get the extra clearance for the carb I would like and get extra air into the bay, but not have to worry so much about rain.....

Anyone ever see a cowl style scoop on a 70-74 barracuda?

Looking for pictures of that and pictures of the same model car with the TA style scoop.

I know someone has done them both before...just cant seem to find pictures....

Because of the pressure differential against the windshield, you will need to worry about rain as much with a cowl scoop as a forward facing TA scoop, possibly even more so.  However, the TA scoop isn't as bad as you might think. When your walking through the rain, does your face get as wet as the top of your head? No. The area of the scoop is relatively minor when compared to the frontal area of the car. By contrast, a cowl scoop pulls air from the base of the windshield. The windshield has a larger percentage of area of the frontal section and combined with its laid back position, will acquire more water on it than the front of the car.

Now, do they look bad, IMO, no. The base design of the R/T Challenger hood and 70 Road Runner hood have obvious hints towards a cowl induction look. But there area lot of mopar guys that think cowl scoops are forbidden on mopars and you'd better be prepared to catch a lot of flak about it. Given the popularity of cowls, it is also possible to get a taller height on them than with comparable 6 pac/ta style hoods, if that is a concern.

Heck, I might try a cowl scoop just to see how many people it does tick off.

BTW, have you actually found a bolt on TA/6 Pac style scoop? I'm not sure those exist, but I haven't done much digging around scoops in a while.

i know i will hear alot of what are you thinking but the cowl hoods look really good to me on our cars!! unless you get a steel cowl and weld it to the stock hood i don't think you would be happy with the results. the fiberglass scoops always crack where the filler is applied to smooth the transition from the fiberglass scoop to the steel hood. there are a couple places that make a bolt on cowl hood for a cuda.

Just my opinion but a shivvy type cowl hood on any Mopar =  :puke: I run an AAR hood and have driven thru rain without a problem, just use a K&N style filter instead of a paper one.You could also  run the same setup as the factory with drains in the base plate.

:iagree:

If you are interested in function, go with the cowl, if you are interested in looks, go with the T/A.  :2cents:

Never seen a T/A on a barracuda though.

I always wondered what an Air grabber hood (like the road runners have) would look like on an e body.  I know someone custom fit a the other style hood on an e and it looked pretty good.

I had a Demon twin hood scoop on my 71 Barracuda when I bought it. Previous owner cut a hole in the flat hood and bolted it on. I was able to get an air cleaner to seal off at the hood an give me cool air and plenty of clearance and it actually looked pretty good. The down side is that 71 flat hoods are worth money for a shaker conversion and you might not want to hack it up.

Got any pictures of that by chance?
Not sure what year hood I have.....no one was buying it from the seller at carlisle......I got it for $50 as I recall late saturday........

Someone told me that my car has the "desired" flat hood on it, and the one i bough it just like it......so i dont know if I got a steal or of that person was wrong about mine.

I just dont want to cut up the one that s on my car because its already painted to match the car and I can easily change back to it if I decide the scoop route is not for me.

Take a pic of the under side of both of the hoods. The difference is on the front part eight behind where the rubber hood bumpers hit.

Hope this helps. It's not very clear but I'll try to find more. I shot it 16 years ago on film and had to scan it to jpeg.

Interesting conversations on effectiveness of forward facing vs cowl style. Also a few pictures too.

Thanks!   Seeing as I do not race, I suppose form is slightly more important than function to me...shaving .15 sec off my time isnt a worry......want it to look great and do something if it can.....
