How do I know what rear end I have?
« on: January 27, 2013 - 12:58:45 PM »
My car is a 318 auto.    How can I tell what rear axle I have and what the ratio is.   I decoded the fender tag but there is nothing about it on there.   All I know is the third member has 10 bolts and the housing measured 3" in diameter.    The tire turns about 1.5 times to every 1 turn of the driveshaft.  What am I doing wrong here?    :dunno:

It sounds like you have an 8 3/4 most likely with 2.76 gears as most 318s had.

Pictures would help though.

Great link.  Thank you.  Mine is 8 3/4. .  Cost effective to build this or put the money towards a dana 60? :feedback:

I believe brads70 looked at the two options and a new Dana versus a built 8 3/4 came out about the same.

Well, unless you are going with a 500+ HP engine, the 8 3/4 will serve you well.

Then again, if you are going to the drag strip often....

Is your 8 3/4 open or closed?  With that big block you wouldn't  have much traction if it is open.

if only 1 tire is turning & you turn the driveshaft 1.5 turns for a full tir rotation then the ratio doubles so you mayhave a 2.90 gear ratio & you do not have a sure grip .
