Barracuda 383 Supercharged in France
« on: January 28, 2013 - 12:54:52 PM »
Hi

I've started a post on the newB section
http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=89892.msg890560#msg890560

Now I guess, I should continue it here?

So, I'm totaly excited since yesterday, the engine has moved back in the car.
And, I wasn't sure if the rally hood would close!

Supercharged engin are very rare in France
Centrifucal superchager are the most rare of them all, might be only 4 or 5 of them for 66 millions of peoples
And... only one is going to be a Mopar! ;)

Next modification, the 8 3/4 form an 1966 B-body

Looks like you may have some issues mounting the K&N filter since it will bump the master cylinder but I'm sure you will figure it out.

How much boost you going to run through it? Looks like an Paxton or Vector setup, mind telling us the brand?

Fun stuff!

About the K&N... yeah, that's an issue ;) but I've already ordered one an inch and an half shorter :)

About the boost, this supercharger is an Procharger D-1SC, it's suppose to be able to go up to boost 32 psi at 62000 rpm at a max of 925hp...
So... how much will I do? No clues!!! And I know no one who's done something close!

But, to be honest the guys at  The Supercharger Store have been an outstanding help so far! I've never met them, only phone and mail, but I've avoid tons of mistakes so far!

I've done the test of the "Play-Doh" modeling compounds ;)

It's tight, but since I do have a belt strap, and hard engine mount the car doesn't move a lot.
And even if it getting to close, I've remove the rallye hood and cut an shaker in a flat hood :)

Very cool setup. So what type of transmission are you going to be running with this? I would think that 8 3/4 would need to be beefed up or replaced with a Dana 60 with all that torque going to the rear end. I would expect that thing would make in the range of 750 ft/lbs of torque. It looks very nice. Please keep us posted on the project and like Brad said, you definitely need to make & post a video when you get it running!!  :2thumbs:

What compression ratio you running on this motor?

Was 9.2, I'm now supposed to be 8.9 or 9.0... not sure!

Depending how much boost you run will affect your compression ratio. I had a buddy who ran a 440 blown with a 174 B&M at 6-8 psi which had an 8 to 1 compression ratio ended up around 13 to 1 .. I remember getting on the freeway with his Cuda and watching the boost gauge go over 6 psi and I was plastered to the seat! Wow! Yup he ran av-gas in this baby!

Ambient pressure is around 14.7 pounds per square inch at sea level but varies slightly due to elevation and barometric conditions.

From Holleys site:
Usually on a 9.5-1 engine the most boost you can run is about 2 psi before you get above the octane rating of pump gas(92/93). That level of boost will usually not make enough additional horsepower increase to offset the cost of the blower kit. Remember, it takes horsepower to make horsepower with a roots type blower. The car will run slower if you do not make enough horsepower to run the blower!

Some things to think about...

On that point, you're totally right, but...

I live in europe, and if our gas is not as cheap as yours (count around 12$ a gallon)
We do have the advantage to run better gas than north america.
On pump gas 95 as the lowest and 98.

Also, I do have an kit or water/ethanol injection,
Obviously, the water is to cool it down. But with an
Ratio around 70% water and 30% methanol, the octane
Is suppose to climb around 104/105

Also, an roots supercharger does pump a lot of hp, where the procharger
Is less gluttony in power (also thanks to the centrifugal acceleration square root of the
Power)

So, in the end, it's a lot less advantageous at low RPM than a roots, but a
Lot more advantageous at mid and high range!

:)

Running cold boost is the key otherwise you are just wasting your time.

Let us know how this works out. Any plans to put her on a Dyno?
