I echo the others regarding condolences.  I know it hurts and hope this trip will help.

If you get to Miami, look me up.  I know a few places you can go to warm your bones (inside and out).

HP_Cuda is right, you should get down to the Keys.  It's a totally different environment down there - you won't be disappointed.

Wow what a story, I was just going to call my wife and say hi while having lunch and then started reading your post.
Talk about a leaky faucet.
That is so cool you are out hitting the road, I have driven most of 66 in the last decade.
It's fun, mostly west of Oklahoma.
For the east side of the country the back roads can be real scenic, there is a web side called road trip USA I think and much like this they can help plan great roads and places to see.
I like hunting out vintage gas stations and diners and I like warmth.
The Grand Canyon and monument valley are amazing at sunset and sun rise you have to see it.
All my road trips were in old darts and dusters I d buy out west and hit the road, never a problem, except once in a 68 Monaco wagon the points distributor despised to give up on me out side billings Montana.
That same trip had me driving that boat through blizzards and ice over the Rockies, saw some amazing things on that trip, like in a huge blizzard in the mountains all of a sudden just ahead of my right fender I see a guy with back pack pushing a bicycle, holly cow!
I stop where I was on a flat surface but could never find him again, not sure if he was a ghost or what but that will always have me wondering about that dude and if he made it.
I'll stop hogging your trip, but just wanted to good luck, have fun, watch your back.
Look the car over like a preflight inspection every morning.
Find shops that will let you under car while you let them change oil, I always do that on the road.
Can't wait to see more.

Thanks guys.    I appreciate all the kind thoughts.

I'm in Georgia.... what a terrific day.  Bright sunshine and about 75 degrees.   Quite a change from Monday!       I didn't put the top down, as when I left, I was in a bit of a hurry and just  threw a bunch of gear in the back seat.  So, I  need to get a little better organized and maximize the limited trunk space first (or my stuff will be blown out on the highway with the top down.)   .    Maybe tomorrow morning!

Tomorrow, I'll drive down east-central Georgia and  plan on spending the night in Venice, FL with an old friend,  and then on to FT Meyers Thursday where I rented a place for a few weeks.   My son and wife and my 9 month granddaughter are coming down this weekend to visit for a few days; will be great to spend some time with them.....  I also have some friends in the area, so will hit the beach and maybe play a little golf and relax over the next few weeks.    I will also check out some of the local area car shows.....

Good advice on checking out  the car each morning -- I do just that and will give her a thorough checkup while  staying in Florida.  I gave her a bath this morning before I hit the road.   While I don;t think they used any salt yesterday up in Virginia on those side roads, she was still a bit dirty :)

Thanks for the advice on places to visit.... my wife and I visited Key West a few years ago, but it still would be a great drive.

I noticed she was running a bit rich today in the warmth (seems like I could smell  fumes when slowing down through small towns)...    She was just tuned up with the engine rebuild (in Vermont) and I think they set her up slightly rich -- does warm weather affect this?

I made it!     After nearly 1,800 miles, I am now in sunny, warm Ft Meyers.     No more shoes - just T shirts, sandels and an occasional beer...... Errr..... Well maybe more than occasionally.

I washed the Challenger and only found one small new chip.   She ran strong.   I haven't totaled the gas receipts, and may not as it really doesn't matter what she did for mileage -- when empty I had to fill her up anyway!

I will stay here for the next 3 weeks, and so will pause and resume posts as I continue my road trip west.  Until then......

Peace,

Sounds great, have a few beer and relax.
Good break in for the engine, maybe do a spec check on the engine, timing, carb, etc, before your next leg of trip.

Sorry for your loss also. Enjoy your trip and be safe. I'm retired also so if you make it this far North on the return trip home let me know and we can at least have lunch someware. I have to admit most people that make it up here are lost. Not much in this state to come for.

As Willie sang.....   On the road again!    I'm leaving Florida after 2 weeks of some golf, sun and beer.    I have some great friends from Vermont who are down here and were very nice in including me is some activities.

So, I had the last 2 weeks to go after any things with the car (I did get the oil changed).....  and was going down this afternoon to put some stuff inside for an early departure tomorrow morning and my darn drivers' door won't open!   Sure wish this would have happened over the past 2 weeks, as now I do have sort of a schedule.....

Anyway - does anyone know how to unstick the latching mechanism?    I spent nearly 2 hours with a local mechanic trying to use screwdrivers, etc. and get it to release..... its not the locking mechanism.   I took off the passenger side so we could compare and see how it seems to operate - but it is just stuck very tight.   I think there may be something broken in the mechanism that won't allow it to release....  So then the question is -- how the heck do you get at it to replace/fix it?    I can't even get the door panel off...

Any ideas - suggestions -- are welcome.    I"'m on my way to northern Florida, southern Alabama/Mississippi over the next few days, so if anyone has somebody they might suggest that I stop and see.....  please let me know.

Is it not opening like its locked? Will the key turn? The interior lock button have any feeling of function? You could try a slim Jim down through the widow channel to see if you can catch the lock or the release.
