Dimmer switch powers the....front turn signal lamps, whaaaa???
« on: January 31, 2013 - 02:44:27 AM »
Just got my dimmer switch late last week back from Slotts and it looks fantastic.  Got it installed in my 72 Cuda and it looks like I've got crossed wires some place and I'm wondering if maybe any of you have run into this before...My dimmer switch seems turns on my front turn signal lamps as you get within the bottom 10% of the dial, and then puts them at full blast when you click over onto what I believe should be the dome light circuit.  I have the illumin8's set up in them, so they're road lamps/turn signals, but it's all the same to the wiring.

The dimmer switch has no affect on the instrument panel lamps (not sure if it's supposed to), the dome light (which it should have an affect on), or any other interior lighting that I can tell...which all worked while the dimmer switch was out and before I even had the time delay relay (if knowing this makes a difference).

I've got rallye gauges which are not currently installed in the car (if that makes a difference).  I just got and installed the time delay relay.  The map light comes on when I open the door (which I think is normal...not sure if that makes a difference), then is controlled by the map light switch when the door is closed.  As expected, the dome light comes on when either door is open.  None of the lights seem to be on any sort of time delay.  I have not tested the time delay relay I just got (wouldn't know how), which wasn't new, but was reported as working from the guy I bought it from and I'd say I trust him.  It does appear to get a little warm while the interior lights are on and running (which is expected).

I've been through the wiring diagrams and it appears everything is connected right...but I haven't stripped off the electrical tape on the main lines or anything to trace every single wire.  Before I had the time delay relay, the map light wasn't connected right...was basically it's own circuit connected into the red three-female mold.  I fixed it so that the map light is integrated correctly into the time delay harness.

Anyways, if you've encountered this phenomenon before, I'd really appreciate any pointers you could give me!

I haven't encountered that before, but it is definitely not the intended operation.  The dimmer switch should control the intensity of the light bar (note the bar needs to be attached to the frame or another ground to function) and when all the way in one direction it should turn on the dome light.

It shouldn't do anything with the external lights. that I am aware of.

I am not sure if it has any function for the optional internal lights (map light/etc) as my car doesn't have any of those.

 :iagree:
Dimmer controls the intensity of the dash & radio lights so there is a wire crossed in the somewhere !!
