Can someone refer me to information on steering sector shaft failures in E-body Mopars?

I had two Challengers back in the day.  Both were totaled as the
result of the steering sector shaft breaking.

Did the shafts actually break? or did the pillow blocks in the coupler fall out?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Both were power steering. I didn't actually see the shaft in either case. My mechanic told me the shaft was broken on the first failure ('70 Challenger).
