Dumb slap stick shifter question
« on: February 03, 2013 - 08:18:33 PM »
OK, so I am not much of a racer but I have always wondered why the slap stick shifer does what it does.  Theory question if you will.

I push the button to bring it out of park etc., Why does it go from 1st to 2nd to drive to neutral with out a button push? What advantage am I getting here?  I can kind of see from first through drive with out hitting the button, but why then all the way to neutral?  I would think that if you are running the gears up in a race that you would want it to somehow not let you put your car in neutral while you have it at full throttle.

One of those questions that I should have asked back in high school.  LOL

If you pull it down to low, it should smack forward only to second, then smack forward only to third. If it goes from low to neutral you have a shifter that is worn or dirty.

That makes a lot more sense.  LOL, I guess I better go look at this thing a little closer.   Thanks for the reply.

OK, I am a dork.  Never mind.  I get it now.  In my defense, I did say I do not race.

Mine has issues, maybe it's the spring.  It will go from 1st to 2nd, but won't set itself up to slap into drive.  This after cleaning and lubricating it too.

You can adjust the travel of the linkage from underneath the car.

I can't get mine to drop into 1st gear.  It ratchets from 2nd into drive okay.  I replaced the bushing in the pivot hanging off the transmission.  I haven't checked the bushing at the top of the shaft.  I suspect that might be worn and allowing too much slop.

You need to unscrew the knob a few turns so the little tab that locates in the gates depresses far enough to pull down to first.
Does that make sense the way I explained it ?

It won't "slap" into drive, even on the bench, without pushing the T handle button.  :-[

I have one I cut out of the car,  don't need it.  Going manual,,     Not sure if it works correctly.
Free to good home if anyone can use it.   Not for resale.  You must need it yourself.
