Heater On
« on: February 05, 2013 - 03:08:14 PM »
Heater is always ON in my 73 A/C  challenger. Have removed the a/c unit permantly. Have checked for a vacuum leak, all good, so might be the empty spades on the back of the control box. There is a green  wire and a blue one. Question is which one goes on which spade.
Don't remember there being a solid cabled wire going to to the heater box to control its doors. Was a long one that went through fire wall, assumed this was to do with a/c ?
Thanks

All those vacuum lines control the doors in the heater box.  The tube with the white check valve on it in the picture comes from the engine compartment and provides vacuum to the control box.  That should be hooked up to a vacuum source in  the engine compartment (like off of the power brake booster inlet).  You need that stuff to work even though you're not running AC so you can have heat or defrost directed where you want.  The missing wire on the block is a light green wire from the fuse block.  The cable through the firewall goes to a valve that controls how much hot water is going into the heater core.

Thanks FY1Cuda,
I have the tube with the check valve hooked to the power brake booster. In the photo I have the blue wire on the lower of the 2 spades . Want to make sure they are the right way around, ie, blue lower/ green higher  OR green lower/ blue higher.   ?
Will closing the doors using the vacuum lines stop the flow of hot air ?
Or are you saying that i have to install a valve on the heater hose in order to connect the cable to it , and therefore be able to stop my heater pumping out hot air ?
Thanks for the help, tony

The blue wire is in the right place.  You just need to find the green one.  You need a heater valve in the engine compartment.  There are different types--some vacuum operated and some cable-operated.  The valve mounts on the inner passenger fender here's a picture that was on this site (not our car) and a link to this type of valve (which we have on a '70 Challenger that was originally AC)

That cable to the control valve is available from Roseville. I got one from them last summer.

Thanks again FY1Cuda, ,
 Have connected the green wire.
i have the original cable so will look at sourcing a valve for the engine bay heater hoses. Think  from memory previous owner had used a garden tap to replace the original valve.
Temporary cure might be to buy some more hose and not connect to the heater, just loop it back.
