AJE Racing makes a tubular mopar K-member.
« on: February 09, 2013 - 11:33:10 PM »
So JEGS is selling them for 491.00 dollars. Anyone know anything about them. The price seems cheap but it is in line with chevy and ford K members cost.

Price looks good and so does the product. Wonder if it accommodates a rack steering setup and if it takes stock parts like LCAs etc?

Looks like it doesn't use stock LCA's.... Pinto rack.

Once you add on all the required components and bracing items, you're going to be close to $3500, which is right where an AlterK is at as a complete, bolt in package that will come with everything to convert and Bill's recommendations for components for use in a racing or street environment and a mopar specific track record.

True.  This unit still keeps the factory control arms, spindles, and torsion bars?

For the street, only two options available if you want rack and pinion:  XV and RMS.

Looking at the pictures of the LCA's I don't think it uses the stock LCA's or torsion bars. ( coilovers?)
RMS is still the only option IMO?

I was looking at that Moparts thread and noticed someone recomending " Bob's Pro Fab" http://www.angelfire.com/bondobob/kframe2.html

That aluminum lower ball joint scares the hell outta me! Look at the steering arm!  :scared:  Wow ," run Forest RUN!"  I sure hope that set up never finds its way onto the street! :faint:   I wouldn't use that set up on a golf cart never mind a real car! :screwy: :nono:   It's crap like this that gives us all a bad name!

Just like the Magnumforceracing front end, the front shock towers is not designed to support the weight of the car.  Would eventually crack w/o serious reinforcing.

Yeah, its apparent that it is an underwhelming product, and yet it has kind of struck a nerve. A QA1 k-member for a mustang on summits only about 250 bucks. I love Mopars but I just don't get why we need to pay 2 to 4 times the prices brand-x er's do. A hobby, or in this case a segment of one, will only remain valid if enough people can afford it. How can the average joe afford to bring his children into fold, if he cannot afford to join the fold himself. Mopars are too quickly going unobtainium, they are more of a status symbol in today's society. It really annoys me that you could build 3 epic Chevrolet cars for the price of one well built Mopar, nuff said.

Simple supply and demand.

To build up a tubular K frame, you need to build a jig to hold all the tubing in place while you weld it. You also need to design all the geometry around it.  All of this work is the same regardless of the make of car. Once it is all said and done, you now need to weld it up and fill it out with parts. Up to this point, everything is equal. Once that is complete, you amortize the cost of the start up against the projected sales volume, available competition, and add in your mark up. Unfortunatly for mopar guys, this is where things all fall apart.  Ford and Chevy guys have a ten to one advantage over us in sheer volume. Now, you take that paltry one and start disecting it and it is 45% resto crowd, 45% drag race crowd, 5% handling crowd and 5% rat machine/daily driver/misc.

Additionally, when you are manufacturing a run of products, it is much easier to perform all the set up and run all the parts through in volumes. Odds are pretty good if you build a chevy tube frame, you can build 100 of those at one time and sell them all over the course of the year, so your total build cost goes down with the increased volume, increased buying power for base components, and decreased set up time.  By contrast, if you build 100 mopar units to keep the cost down, you will sit on those units for the next 10 years before they are all sold. This means you now have carrying costs, inventory taxes, and potential storage fees or lost opportunity costs because they are taking up space in your shop. Also add in to that

Does it suck, yeah. Its even worse for AMC or Studebaker guys, but no where near as cheap as chevy or fox mustang segments. Ultimately, being unique has its costs.

What to be overwhelmed by choice, go to Summit and look up chevy header bolts.
