1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe Rocker Moldings
« on: February 10, 2013 - 02:45:20 PM »
Hi All
I'm looking for any E Body owners that have some good knowledge about the 70 Barracuda Gran Coupe.
I have sent some PM's to members that I know have or had a 70 Gran Coupe. I'm restoring mine and I do not have any reference holes for remounting my rocker trim to go by as my painter filled them. I took lots of pictures during the dissasembly however neglected to take pics of the moldings. Can you tell me if they are mounted with the fins up or down. Thx in advance.

Hey Mike
Why do you say down? Of the 4 PM's I received from GC owners they all say up. Two sent pictures. Do you have a GC with fins pointed down?
Thx
Kim

I don't exactly recall but I would think logically it would be fins down.
The reason being is they would tend to capture dirt and sediment fins facing up.

Fins up!

The ends are slightly tapered to fit the sweep of the wheel well.  And yes,  they would tend to capture dirt and sediment.  But i don't think ma mopar cared much for practicality back then when it came to certain design elements!

There are only two screw holes, on in the front fender and one in the rear quarter.  All the other holes(seven on each side, fourteen total) are for the large clips that slide along the inside of the moulding and then push into the rocker moulding.  These clips are a one time only clip, once they are pushed into the rocker moulding they are almost impossible to remove without breaking.  I am assuming that you do not have any of the fourteen clips required, at least not in usable condition. The holes for those clips are much larger than the holes for the two screws. All the clip holes are inbetween the front and back screw hole.  Does this clear up any questions that you had?  Let  me know, I can answer any other questions you may have.

Kim,
Nice GC 'vert!  I was looking for google images to support the 'fins up' discussion, and "found" an image of a red convertible with white top, and performance hood. The website said the car was sold.  Now i know the new owner!!

A93,
Thanks for the pics of the clips.  unfortunately nobody re-pops those.  i had to use a generic plastic clip, and cut it down to fit (3" to 2 3/8").

Before:

After modifying to fit inside the rocker:

They worked pretty good, other than some flex that the metal clips do not have.  i had to shim the clipped off pieces between the clip and the rocker to 'pop' into the holes on the car.

Drew,
Are they rare? Well only 7886+/- Gran Coupes were made in 1970 (1971 used a different rocker pattern), so i would say yes, the are 'rare'.  and no one that i know is re-popping them.  I would imagine that the extrusion process would be way too expensive for the few cars that are left, and fewer still that haven't been cloned into a 'cuda.

Thanks for all the advise. I will mount them up and parallel to the ground.
For those of you that asked the 318 and 904 were pulled and stashed away. They won't be sold as they belong to the car. I had a rebuilt 1971 340 and no home for it so that and a 727 went into the GC.

Note the exhaust manifolds. They are from a '94 Dakota Magnum with 2" dumps. They fit the bay real nice and clear the steering column. I can't confirm it but I've been told that they flow as well as the early HP manifolds. We'll see.

I'll hope to figure out this picture posting sooner or later.
