Tonight I primed the oil system in the Hemi and installed the bell housing offset dowels. I may be test fitting the Hemi this weekend!

How do you prime the oil system in a G3 Hemi?

If you look in the first picture, you will see a small hose attached to the engine block, just above the oil filer. There are two threaded pipe plugs in the block there that tap into the oil system, one is feed and one is return to pump.

You simply get a new / uncontaminated garden sprayer from your local home supply store, $12USD or so. Cut the spray wand off  insert a brass barbed hose to pipe thread adapter. Fill the sprayer with your preferred oil and pump it up.  While the sprayer is pressurized, turn the engine over by hand to let the oil flow through the pump and engine.

Tips:
1. It's best to remove one spark plug from each cylinder to relieve compression on the engine. This makes it easier to turn and places less load on the bearings while you prime it.

2. Remove a valve cover and watch for the valvetrain to become lubricated, then you know the oil has gotten through the engine passages. Keep turning the engine over with oil pressure until air bubbles are out and the valvetrain drips just as it would while running.

Great tip! Will do that. Did not think it was possible to prime them, since I'm used to the old style, I made a special prime shaft for my BB's.

More progress tonight! I had extremely good luck with the offset dowels. I eyeballed them when I installed them yesterday, knowing I'd set up the dial indicator tonight. Previous total runout, top-bottom was 0.012 and left-right was 0.018, neither of which were going to cut it for this Hemi. With no adjusting runout went to 0.002 and 0.004 respectively. Lucky as can be! Remember to check this on your build fellas as it could have caused vibration issues. Spec is less than 0.006

I also shortened the input shaft on the transmission  7/8" and beveled it to assist mounting.

Here are pictures. Excuse my mess, moving has me out of sorts.

After a 7 month hiatus from the car while building my house, I'm finally getting back on it!


I know that feeling... my 71 Cuda resto has been stalled for 11 months now as I build my LAST house!!!

You must be happy to get back to working on the car - sure is more therapeutic than house building, LOL.
