Hello Mancini?  Yes, I'd like to order a 318/390 stroker kit. Yes, the new one offered at $1549. Ground freight is fine. Thanks!

 :woohoo:

With this new kit, you are now saving $200 for a 348 build compared to going with a pre-packaged 390 kit.

Don't forget balance cost of $300 plus new heads and cam to make that 390 worth it.

If a 390 is cheaper than a 348, than the 390 is already worth it.

It’s not cheaper for 390.
Going through Cambell industries, price is $1400 + $350 to balance = $1750.  Shipping to me is $115, so roughly $2K

Going for 348 ci,
Crank $350
Pistons $242
Balance $250
Main bearings $50
Rod bearings $50
Rod bolts $56
Main bolts $40
Piston rings $75
Rod resize $150
Press piston pins $40

Total $1,217, with many items free shipping, and some combo packs, I am roughly $1350.

And again, 390 is choking through 1.88” standard 360 valves.
Does not make a lot of sense to be ready for up to 500hp, when I have no intention of ever exceeding 370hp.
Matching components to requirements is where I am saving money.
And I like it to spin a little quicker too.

Any thoughts on which size stroker 348 or 390 would work best with either std or HP exhaust manifolds?  Kind of in the same vein as the comments about head port & valve size being a limiting factor for the extra cubes of the 390.  I can either use a set of 302 heads, J Heads or the stock 318 heads whichever works out best for the combo, but I'd like to either stay with std 318, or 340 exhaust manifolds (340 are slightly higher flowing but look similar) or a set of 70 340 HP exhaust manifolds.  I wouldn't have a problem with having the heads worked on but again not sure how much would really benefit an engine with std exhaust.  Opinions on whether one size 348 or 390 works best with exhaust manifolds instead of headers?

road runner,
I put the dakota 360 V8 manifolds in my small block e-body and love them.  They are some of the best flowing manifolds ever for SB mopar.  I even port matched and opened up the collector a bit.  There are two sizes of collector, 1 7/8" and 2 1/8".  There are far superior to my original 1 5/8" SB manifolds with heat stove and it's choking effects.

Best part is, they cost me $30 on craigslist.  I even put POR15 grey cast iron paint on them and they look new.

Thanks, I have read about these and have heard that they flow very well for regular manifolds.  I've looked around for a set, but never found any I was sure were the right ones (larger 2 1/8 vs smaller 1 7/8").  I actually picked up a set of the 70 HP manifolds for a reasonable price a while back so that's still an option, but I'm betting yours 'hide' better so look more stock which is what I'm after for the Barracuda.

Cudaracer,

Did you ever decide which direction you're going to go engine-wise?  I'm trying to gather the rest of the parts I need for mine but still undecided so was wondering if you pulled the trigger on the 318 stroker hardware and if so where you stand in the build and/or how happy are you with your decision.

Can't comment on the 348 or 390 stroker but the 340 heads with the open chambers kill the compression on a 318, unless you are going to mill them down to to get some of it back. They do flow better but the chamber volume is to big.  :2cents:

Yeah, that's why I originally picked up the 302 heads for the 318, but also have a mostly complete 1973 340 including the J heads.  I figure if I just hop up the 318 I'll use the 302 heads, but if I go with more cubes I may use the J heads with higher compression pistons to bring the compression back up.  For now, I'm going to stick a 650 Holley Spreadbore I just picked up with a Performer intake to see how that improves things, and then concentrate on rebuilding the suspension next.

Thanks, Jim
