Looking for good affordable fuel injection.
« on: February 22, 2013 - 01:04:51 PM »
I've got a Charger with a 383 and I've always battled carb issues.  I don't drive the car much which compounds some of the issues.  I'd like to drive it more and possibly convert it to fuel injection.

My biggest hangup so far is that multi-point doesn't seem available for the 383 and since the 383 is a bit over stock I can't find an affordable throttle body injection kit.

Part of the issue is I'm not sure where else to look so I came here.

Any recommendations?

This is where I'd start? I have a STR-14 intake that I someday plan on converting to multiport FI.

Fastman is the closest thing out there that is an off the shelf multi-point system that I know of. Im a little confused though, you said you cant find an affordable TBI kit but the multiport kits are much more expensive. If you have the money, multiport is definitely superior but depending on how much HP your 383 is making you may be able to go TBI. If its less than 600, then the gen 1 FAST EZefi should have you covered. I have it and I love it. If you're over 600 you can still use the gen 1 EZefi but will have to get a dual quad kit or you can wait for the gen II kit as it's suppose to be able to support over 600hp out of a single 4bbl.

What I was saying is that I was looking at multipoint but I don't see anyone making a manifold for a 383.  So... that is why I am looking at TBI.

I'm not sure of the horsepower, but I'm sure it's WELL under 600.  I'd say likely under 400.  It's mostly stock with a larger purple shaft cam, roller rockers, and elec. ignition.

In one of the newer mopar magazines there was a picture of Indy's mod man intake for B engines and it looks like it was cast with pedestals for fuel injectors, so that may be an option.

Unless you really want multiport for it's superior tuning capabilities, I think you would be happy with the TBI. With under 400 hp, the base EZefi kit will work well. Although, you might want to wait for the gen 2 system as it has a couple features I wish I had on my gen 1.

You can always get a single plane manifold, like a Victor, and have it modified:

so what makes more power, FI, or a big Holley on a single plane?
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

All out HP, it can be the same.  However, how's that big carb gonna idle?  Cruise?  Cold-starting?  MPG?

A lot of folks don't get EFI for more HP necessarily, however if you had a laptop and a dyno, I bet you could get more total HP under the total RPM curve.  Big old carb may have all its HP >4000RPM.

If the carb is perfectly matched to the combo by the user and if it's tuned perfectly every day, it can rival the EFI power output. But - EFi interprets it's environment and adjusts automatically plus can be a much better mixer of fuel and air, and metering of that fuel component. So it's better for idle quality and economy in addition to producing that power.

This is my future too, really can't stand all the hassles of a carb system, ESPECIALLY the stinky rich fuel smell after shut down.
The EFI system is closed, so I would hope this would cure it?

Buy the intake you want to use and weld in the bungs. Here is multiport on a holley street dominator.

Seems most drag racers use carbs, to get down the track the quickest.
