Any Good Tie Rod Upgrades? Such as a Heim Joint option?
« on: February 24, 2013 - 01:10:09 AM »
I am in need of replacing my tie rods, so i was just browsing around trying to see if there was a worthwhile upgrade available other than just going for a stock replacement.  Here are some of the things I have come across, but i figured I'd ask you all for some input, ideas, and suggestions.  Sorry if this has been discussed before, a search didn't turn up much for me.  Thanks!

I have seen the heim joint conversion available for the A-Bodies:

As well as these from Hotchkis, but $370 is a bit pricey:

Firm Feel Seems to have a nice looking set:

According to Mopar Muscle Magazine switching to a beefier 11/16th C-Body setup is decent:

Came across these solid tie rod sleeves:

Heim joints on the street are not as good as tie rods IMO. They click after awhile and should be used with seals to keep the dirt out.  If your after minimizing bump steer then rod ends are a OK option, but be prepared for regular inspections. If you have more or less a stock front end then just stick with tie rods, get the C-Body set up.

I used 11/16 ends with PST sleeves and I am very happy with them.

Thanks for the input everyone!  :2thumbs:

Looks like i'll most likely go with the C-Body Tie Rods and the PST solid sleeves

Firm feel stuff is quality as well.  My strut rods and shock plates are firmfeel.  Greats customer service too.  Either I'd recommend.

Front/steering I went with:
-Fast ratio idler/pitman arms (had to hammer the stock style exhaust on the Idler side to clear, certain headers will not work as well)
-Firm Feel Stage 3 p/s box
-Generic tubular (geometry corrected) UCAs
-Re-enforced the LCAs with firm feel plates and added Firm Feel geasable LCA pivot pins
-PST tie rod sleeves w/ the 11/16 C-Body ends (because I do not like the idea of the heim joints on the street).
-Lightweight tubular front sway bar from Hellwig (saved a bundle in comparison to Hotchkis as it was on sale and not much in a quality difference IMO).
-Front brakes are upgraded from drum to Wilwood Six Piston Kit

In the rear:
I did run the Hotchkis rear sway bar paired with their leaf springs and used firm feel shock plates.  I tied the frame with Hotchkis as well.

The handling from stock is incomparable...   Handles better than my 2008 Toyota Camry...   I feel I saved a few hundred by not going 100% Hotchkis and I suspect the results are comparable to the layperson.

LEMOOREACE, what generic tubular UCA did you end up going with?

I bought mine from a seller fabricator on ebay but they are basically the same as PSTs Gmax UCAs.  He welds them up on a jig.  I saved $$ by purchasing without the ball joints driven in(stock style) and without powder coat so I got to see the underlying quality before install and paid only $200 for the pair. They use stock upper bushings too. They have worked out fine but if I were to do it over id choose to have him insert the joints and powder coat beecause it was a PITA.  Any good arm that fixesbthe geometry will work.  PST arms are very reasonably priced and are not heim  joints like Hotchkis or Magnumforce if you are steering clear of that style assembly.
