« on: February 27, 2013 - 10:08:29 AM »
Hi!

Last summer i bought my first Mopar, a -73 Challenger.

By curiosity i tried to decode my fender tag, but i still have a question.

What do the "I" stand for? i marked it on the picture. Ofc i would appreciate a full decode of the tag!

Sorry for my bad english, im am swedish after all  ::)
Really nice forum btw!!!

Hi Suulan, welcome to the forum!

I think we have a few members here from Sweden.

If I'm not mistaken, the "I" may mean International for an export car.

Briefly looking at your tag I can see these codes.  The codes I post are for 1970-1971 cars so they may be off a little but close if not the same as what your 1973 car was optioned with.

Would be cool if you wnet to the "newbie section and introdueced yourself and post some pics of your car.

R11  AM Radio (2 Watts)

V5X  Black Body Side Molding

H51  Air Conditioning

J52   Inside Hood Release

L25   Trunk Lamp

L31   Hood/Fender Mounted Turn Signals

More to come...
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

M21   Roof drip rail moldings

M25   Wide sill moldings  (I wonder what those look like?  :clueless: )

V1X    Black Full Vinyl Top

B41   Front Disc Brakes w/Standard 10" RR Drum

C16   Console w/Woodgrain Panel

C56   ????  Maybe bucket seats???

G37   OS Dual Racing Mirrors

FY1   Top Bannana yellow exterior paint??????  Not sure about that one...

A6X9   Interior color code, not sure which one.  Not blue, might be black?   :clueless:

C19  Scheduled build date.  Might be March 19, 1973.  Maybe...  :dunno:

E44  318 engine

D34  Light duty Automatic transmission

E02644  ???????

JH23G3B270289 is your VIN number   The 5th digit for your car will be a "G" for 318 engine.  This is a non- Rallye car.  It did not come with the A57 Rallye option.  More than likely has a standard gauge set up.

Hope this helps!

Now i got a counterquestion tho.. If this is an Export-car, those seem to be rather rare according to what i have read. Or am i wrong?? :clueless:
Is there anyone out there who can tell how many of the Challengers that was actually Exported each year?

I do not believe there are any records as to how many were exported in a given year.  They are rarer as most cars were coded for either US (U) or Canada (C).  My understanding is a lot of the I cars were ordered by US service men, but I don't have anything to confirm that.

There are no numbers for Export/International cars. In addition just because it has an "I" doesn't mean it was exported. Most of them were ordered by service men while overseas and delivered when they returned to the US.

Oh, thanks alot for your answers!
One other little detail that makes me suspicious about my car is International, is that i got a KPH speedometer instead of MPH.

Too bad there are no specific numbers..

I think that sort of modification would have been done after shipping not at the factory, so maybe your car was actually exported.

Does your dash VIN plate look similar to this? (of course starting with a 3, not a 0.

If it did not have the full VIN (like my picture) then I would have a better guess as to where it was sent in Europe. If it was ever sent there.
Some "I" cars were ordered new in Europe and actually sent there. Your car might be one.
Most "I" cars that we see, were ordered from an out of (USA and Canada) place., but the servise man that ordered it, had it delivered to a place in the USA.
Soldiers came home and picked up the car at a local dealer.
