year model confusion ????
« on: March 01, 2013 - 12:48:10 AM »
I have a Cuda, manufactured 22nd Aug 1973, 340 auto based on the decal on the drivers door.
I was told by another mopar enthusiast that my car is "officially" a 1974 model. He states 73 models started Aug 1972 and finished July 1973

Mu understanding is that the '74 never came out with a 340 engine.

Is it just that I have one of the last of the '73 models. All my numbers match ie funder tag, dash tag, engine, rad support etc.

Anyone clear this up......Thanks

What does the title say?   Do your shoulder straps fold up above the window or mounted on the seat?

Yes the shoulder straps fold up above the door.
I'm pretty sure the title says '73 model but I'd have to check to be 100% sure. I dont really read it, just pay the bill.

I can't imagine that anyone would go a long way to create a fake 74 from a 73. If your VIN and fender tag say it's a 73, I'd put money on it being a 73.

Does the VIN start with BH23H3? or BH23L4?
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

:iagree:  See what the VIN and other documentation says.

I would venture a guess that your friend has the dates correct and you are correct to say that 340s were not offered in '74 but your never know what happened at the factory.  I'm going out on a limb but I might venture a guess that maybe the factory could have extended the '73 year manufacturing for what ever reason.  Who knows, especially if they already knew that '74 would be last year for these cars and maybe delayed plans or didn't put much effort into the '74 line knowing these cars were going away.  :dunno:

They could ave been trying to use up the parts bin from 1973 before going on to the 1974 cars.  I think the reason they went to the 360 was because of emissions, yes?  If that was the case maybe they were using up all the 340 engines before the 1974 models came out?  :dunno:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

It all depends on the VIN.  Regardless of the later scheduled build date, if the 6th digit is a "3", your car is a 1973

An 8/22/73 build car should be a 1974 model. The 340 makes it interesting, because you're right, you couldn't get a '74 with a 340. BUT, Ma mopar had a habit of using up the last of the previous years parts before starting the new model stuff, especially for early production #'s. So, if all the #'s match on your car and engine, you have a pretty rare thing.

I do know a few things about this, because my Challenger has a 8/17/71 build date. It is a '72 model year car, has the frowny grille and '72-'74 tail lights. But it also has 1971 door/window hardware, had a 1971 style gas tank, and probably a few other things I haven't found yet. My vin shows it as a '72, my door sticker says 8/71.

Check the 5th digit of the VIN. But with that build date, it should be a '74 model.

The 5th digit is a 3 and yes the title states it as a '73 model.
The number at the end of the vin is 576279, I've googled trying to find a way to reference this to a production run number but cant find anything. Would have been nice to know the start and end production numbers, that would explain a bit......

I'll just take it as an "end of run" '73 model.
