tig or mig for panel repairs/replacement
« on: March 03, 2013 - 02:03:08 AM »
Hi
whats everyones oppinions on what welder to use for rust repairs. i can tig weld but havent realy done anything dirty before. most the work i intend to do will be changing complete panels (i intend to replace the complete rear quarter not add a repair section) so i shouldnt have many welds that need to be workable.
should i just take the easy way out and get a mig or am i going to be happier if i take the time to clean everything up for tig. does anyone use oxy/acetylene anymore?
thanks in advance, Mat

Some say that mig is easier for the reason that rusty metal is not as much a problem. However the seams do show up on hot days in the sun. A tig weld expands and contracts at a more consistant rate. If you are painting a dark color it should be a consideration.

Even mig likes clean metal but may be a bit more forgiving. If you have the tig and know how to use it I think you`ll be fine.

I used Mig and Epoxy on the joints that Lapped.  Careful with the distance you weld each time as it tends to distort fast.  I just bought a Tig and think next one will be more Tig than Mig.

If you have a TIG and know how to use it well, I wouldn't even look at a MIG.

i have neither yet. i have a mate with a good tig that said i can borrow that when i want to. so im leaning towards just getting a cheapy gasless mig (gas bottle rental here is rediculous) to attatch the panels then using the tig to finish things up and do any welds that will be within eyesite
