unusual '71 HemiCuda fender tag coding
« on: March 03, 2013 - 05:50:26 PM »
I'm pretty comfortable decoding fender tag codes (with all the online decoders who isn't?) but this one seems a bit unusual to me. I'm looking at this '71 HemiCuda fender tag and some of the codes (or lack of) don't seem familiar to me. Thought I would run it by you "experts" to get a different perspective on them.

1. Its a D21 4-speed car with a 4:10 Dana. Shouldn't the A34 axle code be on the tag??

2. It has an A60 package code? What is that? The only place I can get anything to come up on that is on the MyMopar site where all it states is that it is a "special 4-speed package" but doesn't elaborate on what it includes. What is that package about??

3. It is coded B41 for manual disc brakes (don't think I have seen that one before). With the 4:10 Dana I would think that it would have B51 power disc brakes as part of the Super Track Pack package ... but then again it isn't coded with the A34 axle package??

4. It is coded C13 for front shoulder belts (haven't seen too many of those).

5. It has white billboards which from what I have seen are normally coded V6W. This one has a V9W code in lieu of V6W. What is that suppose to be??

Experts ... opinions please.

Cheers!

I've never seen those codes on a E Body fender tag before. It's also missing J25 which always found with A62 or N96

Looks to be a very odd tag.  I would not trust that tag without a lot of documentation to back it up.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Does the last 6 digit of the VIN begin with 197xxx?

I am curious to know answers to RzeroB's questions.

Regardless of it's vin or hokeyness.

Can someone answer them?

Ola

Hmmm nope. Last six actually starts with a "2"

Really curious about that A60 "special 4-speed package" - wonder if included the Dana?

I wonder if since this car has manual disc brakes instead of the power disc brakes that was part of the A34 Super Track Pack package if that is why A34 is not on the fender tag?

C'mon experts ... I know someone out there on this board knows the difinitive answer.

Pretty sure all Hemi 4 speeds had a Dana and I've never seen A60 code on the tag, but I'm use to more 1970 tags.  If you're thinking of buying that car I would do LOTS of research first.  I'm betting it's a fake.  That tag has lots of things that don't line up.  If you really want to know for sure just email a photo Barry at Hamtramck Historical.  You might have to give him the full VIN, but you'll have the answer you'll looking for.  He knows about as much as anyone when it comes to the tags.  Personally I would trust him over anyone when it comes to verifying a tag.

What is the build date?  I can't tell from the photo, but it appears to be an "A3?" build month (OCT) and that would be really early for a VIN in the 200,000 or about half way through the production year VIN's.

According to Galen Govier's white book:

A60   71  71  4-SPEED SPECIAL PACKAGE

4-speed Manual Transmission w/"reverse" Light, LH Outside Remote Chrome Mirror, Body Belt Mouldings and "Rim Blow" Steering Wheel.

So much wrong with that tag it's not funny.

Thats the A60 "4-speed special package"?? What does mirrors, moulding and a steering wheel have to do with the transmission?? I thought for sure it was some kind of a special driveline package or something. No wonder I've never seen that code before. Was probably a sales-bank car cause who else would check that option off on the order sheet other than a dealer? Thanks Anlauto for solving the mystery of A60! Now we just have to figure out the rest of its oddities ... assuming that it is legit of course.

Cheers!

Possibly a fake. It does have some strange codes. B41 (could be rationalized as a mistype for B51), C13 (standard on hard tops) and should not be on this Data Plate, G37 (should be G31 G33 if both side mirrors) V9W (found on Challengers) perhaps mistyped for V6W.

But:
Take a look at the SPD. It looks like A3B. Here is a possible scenario. The entered info or actual stamping machine, had an error or malfunction during the Data Plate stamping process.
If the last 6 digits of the VIN start with 2, that would be appropriate for a (Bxx) SPD sometime in November.
Perhaps the machine meant to stamp the Axle code (A3x) but it was miss placed/mistyped on the wrong line. The correct SPD month of (B) was partial stamped in its proper place, but the stamping protocol only stamped the 3 characters in that part of the plate.
Just trying to guess....

The A60 does not belong for the E-Body assembly line. It may have been inadvertently left from another body model. (Has anyone ever seen A60 used for any other car?  :clueless:) Or once again, wrong info inserted or mistyped.

Is this a car that you know about, or perhaps just a picture of the Data Plate that you have in your collection? Would you have seen the VIN and/or any additional information verifying it as a real hemicuda?
I'm asking because I have collected information on E-Bodies for many years. I also know people that have a lot of info on the 71 hemicudas.
I have recieved some interesting information about this Data Plate.

It is quite possible that the employee in charge of the Data Plate process that day, messed up.
