Need info on VA State inspections (classic car)
« on: March 09, 2013 - 08:47:30 PM »
'Lo, all!

Looking for info on what kind of inspections (if any) the state of virginia requires for cars from 1966 (all original classified as "Historic" in MD) and 1973 (highly modified and MD class'ed as a Street Rod).

Also, what alternatives does VA offer in the way of vanity tages (MD allows up to 7 characters).

Background: the latest libtard gun control insanity (with NO crime control at all) is the straw that breaks the camel's back: my wife and I (and a LOT of others) are BAILING out of the state of maryland (can't get out of this menagerie quick enough)!

Perhaps it'll turn out the only redeeeming factor md has is that they require absolutely NO inspections of either classic historic or street rods (defined as anything 20 years +)

Thanks in advance for any assist!

PS - (I'm open to suggestions if there's a better forum for me to post this query)

If you have Antique tags in Virginia, there is no state inspection & the tags are permanent (no yearly date tabs). The only requirement is that the vehicle must meet the safety requirements of the year it was manufactured. Most of the police here (in VA) are not familiar with the state regulations concerning antique tags. I would recommend that if you do end up getting antique tags, you keep a copy of the state regulations in the glove box in case you get pulled, you can educate the police (if req'd). I always keep a copy & have had to pull it out on more than one occassion to show the police that I was complying with the law.

Also new in Virginia; when you go to the DMV to get antique tags for a vehicle (antique/classic is 25 years old or older), you must show proof (valid registration card) that you own a daily driver in addition to the antique/classic vehicle. This law was put into place to keep folks from using their antique vehicle as a daily driver which isn't permitted with antique tags. That's not to say that you can't use an antique vehicle as a daily driver, you can, but it can't have antique tags, you'll have to get a regular set of tags which will include having yearly state inspections.

Hope that helps out some with regulations in VA!!!

At least the last time that I looked into it, which was decades back, Virginia had serious limitations on using antique tags. I want to say you were limited to a few hundred miles per year, and the car could only be drive to, in or from shows, parades, etc. Things might have changed since then.

Back in the day, i.e. the same time period, car inspections in VA were a huge scam. The process was overseen by the state police, who would pull you over, tell you that they were going to give you a ticket for some bogus crap (I once had one tell me that I had to have a passenger side mirror even though the car never came with one), and then they'd "relent" and tell you that if you followed them to a repair shop and had the problem fixed immediately then you wouldn't get the ticket. The repair shop was in cahoots with the cop, and the cop would get a kickback from the very inflated cost of the "repair." Again, this is decades ago, and I haven't had this happen since I came back to VA in 2010, but when I was in high school it happened multiple times to me and many of my friends.
