Carpeted trunk kit?
« on: March 10, 2013 - 08:50:31 PM »
Hi there! This is my first post since I joined last year! Anyway:

Does anybody know if there is a trunk carpet kit for 70-74 'Cudas like the one XV makes for the Challengers?
http://www.xvmotorsports.com/media/XVTrunkProductDoc.pdf

Or do you think the one for the Challenger would fit a 'Cuda. What is the difference of the two trunks?

I don't think the cuda kit would fit since the top of the quarters slope differently than challengers and the tail panel piece would be different. If you're pretty handy, they aren't that hard to build. Just a lot of measuring and fitting. I built mine for ~150 bucks and a few afternoons of time - it's basically just plywood and marine carpet.

I saw that kit but wondered wheere you would put the spare tire?  Guess it doesn't matter if you don't drive the car I guess.  It does look nice.

Yeah, I couldn't bring myself to spend $800 for something that wouldn't fit that would end up getting hacked.

Would you have any pictures for inspirational purposes? I'm curious as how how it all mounted together.

I was planning on making some cardboard templates and transferring to plywood, then cover with carpet. I want to make it secure but removable. I don't want to just screw into panels or weld brackets, because I might want to go back to stock.

As far as a spare tire. I usually don't run with one around town. When I first got the car as a daily driver, I had a spare, jack, wrench and tool box. It would all get tossed around. If I get a flat now, I have a cell phone, call the wife or a buddy. I'll throw one in the trunk when we drive out of town. That is why I'd want the kit easily removable. Thinking of using door panel clips into preexisting holes :clueless: This will take some time for brainstorming.

Currently my trunk isn't finished. I plan on treating for corrosion and laying down Dynamat and then carpet. This is the direction I'm leaning towards, rather than painting body color.

Best material to use for panels is ABS plastic.  It's far more durable, moldable, and versatile than plywood.  Plus, it won't warp due to moisture exposure.  I just recently purchased a 4' x 8' x 1/4" black sheet from these guys for $108.00.  http://www.gavrieli.com/ABS.html  Best price in the LA area.  Didn't need to have it shipped, since I live local.  I'll be making my own trunk panels for my Challenger, and will likely cover them in the same 80/20 black loop carpet that's used in the cabin area.

Sure, I'll try to take some this week or weekend. I basically did as you were planning. I made a template with cardboard and then I transferred it over to 1/4" plywood. I then fitted the 1/4" till it was about perfect and mirrored it to thicker plywood (7-ply I think?) Everything I did used existing holes, can be removed, and is basically held in place by velcro. It isnt a nice on the backside as XV's kit, but when installed it looks great.

Hopefully these help, the first pic is an existing one I had. The others I took real quick, I wish I had time to take it completely apart but I think you can get the basic idea from the last picture. As I said before, I used 7-ply and marine grade carpet (it stretches a little) The velcro is the 'industrial' strength kind and it attaches to 90 degree framing brackets you find at a hardware store, you only need one side of velcro as the marine carpet provides the other side (its basically velcro texture). The base section has adjustable legs near the back of it that thread into t-nuts inserted into the plywood - that is how I adjust the height. I have a small bracket near the rear that attaches to an existing hole on the lock mechanism cage and it holds the base in place.  There are two brackets that attach to the trunk hinge bases (see last pic) that prevents the main upright from collapsing in. The rest of it is all held in place with those angle brackets w/ velcro.

/\ /\ That came out really nice!

I made mine a few years ago, but i never designed side pieces (so it was just the front, floor, and rear).  You have given me the motivation to re-do my trunk enclosure!
