There were no SE T/A cars so it's either 1 or the other.

:iagree:  Either or.  Of the 2, I would say it's an SE.  I don't see anyone going to the trouble of messing up a T/A by adding an SE window plug.

Post some pics, we love looking at pics and figuring this stuff out.

What's the VIN start with?  Don't all the T/A cars start with JH?  What do the SE cars start with?  I think there were base and R/T versions of the SE cars..  :dunno:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Ooops, forgot you question.  I think the VIN might be JH, the VIN being most telling then contact Barry Washington at the Hamtramnck (Spelling?) Historical to see if he has record of this car.

Obvious things to look for are fiberglass T/A hood, passenger rear mounted antenna, no antenna hole in the passenger front fender, I think the front fenders were special in they had notches on the top arch of the fender lip. Rear spoiler.  Look under the trunk lid for 4-5 rectangular holes cut out of the understructure for access to bolting down the T/A spoiler.  Not all 1970 Challenger trunklids came with them so if you see just small round holes to access the nuts for the T/A spoiler then either the trunk lid was replaced or the T/A rear spoiler was added to a regular Challenger.  T/A cars could come with either standard or Rallye gauges.  If Rallye Gauges then the tach should go to 8,000 rpm, not 7krpm unlesss it was replaced.  Reset knobs should go through the wood grain on the dash and not the lenses for the 1970-1971 style rallye set up.

I think, but not positive that there were column shfted T/A cars, again, not positive on that...

Could be other stuff, others will chime in...

T/A Challenger.......JH23J
RT..............JS23

Also the code A53 I believe should be on the fender tag.....(TransAm option).

Yep! You will get the definitive answer right there with the first five characters of the VIN sequence.
Cheers!

Most likely an SE with some T/A after market features to make it a clone of something not actually offered out of the factory.  Only buy clones if you really, really like the car as they get hurt on resale.

I'm living that nightmare, TA/SE, PO added all the rare parts he could find to my base model 318 car.
I'm keeping the TA theme, final SE item t get rid of is that stupid small back window.

What genius thought it would be an "option" to put in a rear window that limits visibility?

Other way's to tell ....TA's have torque boxes in the rear like convertibles and hemi cars and exhaust hangers on the inside rear rocker area. Also antenna in the rear passenger side.
