Torsion bar question
« on: March 13, 2013 - 08:45:45 PM »
Hi everyone

This might sound like a stupid question, but what way are you suppose to slide the torsion bar in place? I know that "L" is left and "R" is right, but I mean, if you slide it one way, it will twist to one side, but if you install the same bar to the same side, but rear becomes front, it will twist to the opposite side, right? So, I am confused. Part number, (778R & 779L in my case), are stamped on each end of both bars. The "R" bar says CCL 778R on one end and 430 778R on the other, while the other bar says CCL 779L on one side and 440 779L on the other side. Anybody can help?

Thanks

Robert

They should be straight , this is probably why some headers hit the T bars , give yourself as much clearance as possible

Orientation of the bar doesn't matter.  It will always twist the same way.  As long as the Left is is on the driver's side and the Right is on the Passenger side.

Not to steal the thread but is their always a left and right? I have aftermarket bars from PST and didn't notice any L or R markings, but never really looked either.

I've heard that about aftermarket bars.  The Chrysler bars are left and right because the 'flats' aren't in-line with each other.

Yea, it doesn't matter which way you put them in as long as L is driver's side and and R is passenger side.

All the bars I have seen in cars that have never been apart have the part number at the crossmember. 778 & 779 would be to the rear of the car.

That's what I thought too. Problem is I have part number at both ends of the bar. One end says CCL 778R while the other end says 430 778R... :clueless:

I have two untouched cars here.  I will look at them as soon as I can and see which way the bars are in.

On bars over 1" in size, the left and right demarkation is no longer needed because of the higher rate.

Having original cars for documentation is priceless but one or two cars doesn't say for certain how they were installed on all cars.
Most likely how they were handled during all their processes would tend to make me believe the majority were never turned around before installation, but that doesn't mean that they couldn't be...
