Auto to 4Speed
« on: March 17, 2013 - 11:10:46 AM »
This topic probably has been risen many times before.
I have a 71 Challenger with an Auto and a 440 in it and want to go 4 Gear.
I have a 73 A833 tranny. Just rebuilt. (Is it strong enough) 23 spline

Is the crossmember the same?
Driveshaft length same going to 4 speed?
Do I have to change the tranny yoke output shaft or driveshaft to match it up anyway?

The Flywheel and Bellhousing.. Where the hec can I get them? And which ones??LOL (I'm in Canada.. wonderful)
And I have to be careful as to which crank I currently have... Apparently I have a 1968 440... But how can I tell if they ever changed the crank over the 40 some odd years?

I know I'll need
4 speed pedal assembly pedals etc
Z Bar
4 Speed hump
Clutch fork/clutch assembly - pressure plate - clutch
shifter linkage and shifter
frame mount for Z bar

Any help if grateful guys..
and if anyone has a bellhousing and flywheel for sale that can be sent to Toronto canada without paying an arm and a leg let me know.
Preferably anyone with info on someone here in Canada would be great.

Thanks again

The best bet is  a new belhousing , several people make good ones , I would contact Brewers , , they will have any parts you need .
Crossmember & driveshaft / yolk are all the same as the 727 auto .
 I would recommend a McLeod 10.95 " B&B/Long clutch on a 130 tooth flywheel .
teh crank can be easily drilled for clearance as long as you use the Dakota roller pilot brg .

Pay attention to the Retainer Drive Pinion. That is the piece that holds the front bearing in and the Throw out rides on... Measure the opening at the back of the bell housing and then make sure you have a Drive Pinion piece that will fit 'Correctly' into the rear of the bell

Check out this web site and click on the picture with the words Gear Ration on the left side near the top of this site. Notice photos of all the different Drive Pinion covers to the right hand side of this page opposite the words 'Gear Ration'...

Had someone else on another site warn me about this issue.... Can be done and not rocket science... Have fun...

Neil, I meant to ask in my thread but I think it's just as relevant here: why do you recommend these pieces? What advantages do they have, and are there disadvantages?

Tried & true , the product works so I keep using them , the B&B / long is a lighter pedal pressure with the same clamping force , the bonze pilot bushing is fine but with an Auto crank the hole may not be deep enough or centered

With Bellhousings. Can I use any Big Block Bellhousing?
Are all E Body Bellhousings Aluminum?

Can I use a Cast Iron Bellhousing from a 440 Charger?

Might be a dumb question and I apologize in advance.

I'm in Georgetown ON. I highly recommend Brewers Performance for all the parts you need.
I wouldn't mess around trying to get used parts to "fit or work" you're just asking for headaches....

I use a US Postal address for any big parts that I buy. It's right across the border at Niagara Falls.... www.cbiusa.com

You could also try contacting Nigel Mills at National Moparts in Beaverton ON, he might have used parts like pedals etc...
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

the Cast bell will fit but you need a different flywheel with 143 tooth ring gear & the larger 11" clutch , I recall a 12" clutch will actually fit that flywheel as well  just a different list of parts needed .

okay heres a dumb question.. can you use a 10.5 inch clutch assembly with an 11inch flywheel and cast iron bellhousing?
It probably would work but there would be less clamping force due to the smaller clutch is that correct? Or it just doesn't fit and isn't compatible to use at all.

the 130 tooth flywheel [Alum bel]has the same bolt pattern for both 10.5" & 10.95" clutches
the 143 tooth flywheel [cast bel] has a larger bolt pattern & will only accept 11 or 12" clutches

Thank you Chryco Psycho for your quick response. I am looking for a shifter for myA883 tranny I purchased and saw a B body shifter on Classic industries but no E body shifters??? Arent shifters the same?? I know the shifter lingage has to be specific to the car but the actual shifter they should be the same and interchangeable too no? i want to purchase it from their site and its like $174 or something.

Thanks again for all your help..

E-bodies are different, the arms that the rods attach to are positioned so that the linkage clears the torsion bar cross member.

Does this have everything needed to convert the pedal assembly, or is there something missing?
