Trunk opening repair

I'm surveying the damage on my '72 barracuda, and the area around the trunk lid opening where the seal sits, has some rust issues.

It would take alot of work to try patching all the bad spots, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any replacement pieces made for this?

Is the rusted part between the trunk opening and the rear window??  Replacement metal is available for that area!    :grinyes:

No, for the most part that is just fine, it's on the side of the trunk.

I had thought about buying that piece and using the trunk edge piece to patch the two sides, but it has some curve to it, so that would take some work also.

Do the new "full quarters"  or factory style quarters or what ever they are called go all the way into that area?  The only pictures I've seen are from the side, and the only difference I can see between them and the regular skins are the full ones extend up the sail panel to the factory seam.

I would cut that lip from a donor car with a saimilar lip on the trunk opening

The more I get into the trunk area, the more it looks like I'm going to need to find someone willing to cut up their car for me  ;)

It looks as though I could use a whole new taillight panel.

Nobody makes the panel for round tailight cars yet so you have scrounge for them.. I have seen some
on E-pay but they were not nearly as expensive as the '70 to'71  ones :thumbs:

For E-pay I would type in (cuda tail) under search.  I just tried it but there is nothing at the moment :coffee:

I have picked them up at the swaps but they are few and far between nowadays

98hd can you post a pic of the rusted areas?
if its just short lengths, you can bend replacement sheetmetal to match fairly easily in a vice with a body hammer and piece it in.
if longer, you need a sheetmetal break and then slice it every inch to let it curve. blend with hammer.

if just small holes, you can put a piece of copper behind the hole and use a mig welder to "fill" the hole by deposting metal. the molten metal will not stick to the copper., then grind. the back side will be nice and smooth cause its formed by the copper. I have filled thousands of holes with this techinique, its like pouring molten steel into the hole. you cant even tell its been repaired once you get it done. works good on trunk lips cause they dont warp because of all the sharp bends. you can bend the copper to fit the curves etc and just fill away.

I have one of those copper tools, and it will work with some of the small holes, but some are too big for that I think.

The true story will be seen after I get it media blasted, until then I'm just trying to come up with different options for getting it all fixed up.

Besides for the trunk area, the car dosen't have much rust, just a little by the hood hinges andunder the battery box.

RUSTY Cuda, that repair looks pretty good  :thumbs:

The pics don't show the holes too well, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see what it looks like after blasting and go from there.

Rusty and I went through the same thing. I basically hand made the trunk gutter pieces. The good news is that the straight portions are easy to make. Get a small sheet metal benchtop brake from Harbor Freight and go to town. The corners are much more difficult. I used a shrinker/stretcher to fab up the corner pieces. And yes, the full quarters that are on the way should include the top side of the trunk lip. When you discect the trunk lips, there's the top pieces is spot welded to the bottom piece. The bottom piece is welded to the tail panel and to the rear window filler.

Let me know what you want to do on the tail panel. I have an extra one. It will need some work around the license plate area. Email me and we can discuss the kind of shape you need one in (i.e. needing some work or ready to go). I could get this one in perfect shape, but it will take some time.

Thanks for the pics.  I think you guys are inspiring me to attempt to make my own patches.  I need to get a sheet metal brake anyway.  As far as the tailpanel goes... I have been slowly disecting the rear of the car, and the part I was most worried about trying to patch on the tail panel is actually not part of the tailpanel, guess I should have looked closer before.  It seems as though all the patching it needs will be simple to recreate w/ a sheet metal brake.  I will keep you in mind though if it comes back from the strippers worse off than I expect it too.

Different area but Just to give you one idea on the compound bends I notched em every inch or so, worked for me but a lot of weldind & grinding, another person saw it & (sorry can't remember who to credit) said he would do it in 2 pieces, cut at the lower line & then make the lower piece seperate so you have one long weld at the line, tried that on the back of my doors & it worked well! Rich.
