4 speed fill plug
« on: March 22, 2013 - 02:43:21 PM »
How tight should the fill plug be on a 4 speed transmission?

I noticed there is a small trickle of fluid coming out of the plug on my Challenger's 4 speed transmission, it is not a constant drip.

I did not use teflon tape on the plug's threads when I filled the transmission.

I have tried to tighten the plug in more but it seems the plug will continue to thread in and not get tight.

Should the plug be tightened until completely snug or do I need teflton tape on the plug's threads?

Thanks.

Plug should be pipe thread, so it should get tighter as you screw it in. Interference fit. Usually don't need a sealer, but if it leaks enough to bother you, I would use a paste teflon sealer from a tube versus tape. You might want to try another plug as well.

The tranny should only be filled to about a 1/4 inch below the hole.I would re tap the hole and the put some  silicone sealer on  the  threads.

make sure you have a pipe plug (which has tapered threads) and not a conduit or straight thread plug.  If a pipe plug won't stop the leak then you should use a thread sealant.
