Gas tank venting
« on: March 23, 2013 - 04:15:48 PM »
I am in the process of mocking up my gas tank and fuel lines.  I was looking around for pictures of fuel line routing and I saw some posts about gas tank venting, ECS, and charcoal canisters.  I read that portion of the FSM for my '71 Challenger and checked a lot of other posts online and I understand the concept, but I've got a problem.  All of that stuff is missing from my car.  And I didn't know better and the gas tank I got is a non-ECS one and doesn't have any barbs to connect hoses for venting.  My fuel filler tube does not have a barb on it either.  I'm not concerned with factory correct appearance but I do want it to run properly and plan on driving it often.  I don't want it to puke gas from the gas cap or crush my gas tank like a tin can from the vacuum.  Here is what I will have:  non-vented/non-barbed gas tank, non-barbed filler tube, 3/8" supply fuel line, 5/16" return line, electric fuel pump.

Are any of these options better than the other?
1- Use a vented gas cap and make sure I don't leave the car parked completely full of gas and then not worry about anything else.

2- Get a filler tube with a hose barb and run a 1/4" line to vent into the frame, and use a vented gas cap.

3- Drill a hole in the gas tank and install a bulkhead connector and run a 1/4" line to vent into the frame and use a vented gas cap.

4- Do either of the two above, but instead of vent into the frame run the 1/4" line up to the engine and "T" into the hose that connects the PCV valve to the carburetor, and use a vented gas cap.

I appreciate any help.  Thanks!

Kyle,

To keep it simple, I'm using option #1.

I bought a vent kit for a '70 model which was a hose barb and the correct metal hose and rubber hose and clamps to vent into the frame rail. Use your filler tube by just drilling a hole for the barb and sealing it. The barb slips in from the inside the filler tube and the rubber piece on the outside will hold it in place.

Thanks for the input guys.  I was hoping that option #1 was ok because I just spent 3 hours crawling under my car custom bending the 3/8" and 5/16" lines.  If I had to run another 1/4" line I was not going to know what to do because I have already used every swear word that I know! :pullinghair:

Got JOB, where did you get that vent kit from?

I got it from Year One but it was about 10 years ago. I would think it would still be available from some vendor. I marked my filler tube for the barb then unscrewed it from the quarter panel, pushed it into the tank slightly, rotated it and drilled the hole for the barb from the trunk. I used some JB Weld to seal the barb on the outside. Stuff a paper towel inside the tube to catch your metal filings. The barb was flared and went in from the inside of the tube. Run a 3/8 return line if it is not too late. If you are planning on a bypass regulator ( which I use problem free) you need the same line up and back

Curious about the success of adding a barb to a filler tube?
Seems like it would leak?

Why would it leak?  The barb is flared and installed from inside the tube. Seal it on the outside with some type epoxy like JB Weld. Mine is on my '71 vert and has worked  fine the last 10 years and never has leaked any gas. With the vent kit installed it looks like a stock  '70 model filler tube.
