Latest News On Future Of Challenger?
« on: March 25, 2013 - 01:35:37 PM »
I'm beginning to really think hard about getting a new Challenger, and would appreciate any news folks have here on whether or not the Challenger is still due to be retired, if so when, if not will it be redesigned & when, etc.  Honestly, I like the way it is now, and the only improvements I'd like to see is maybe some lighter materials to drop some weight, maybe change the platform to allow wider tires than the current model, etc.  That said, if the choice is tweak what is already there but leave it largely unchanged, or do a remodel similar to what Ford is planning for the Mustang going away from the retro look, LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS!!  Seriously, if the Mustang goes modern & the Camaro is already 1/2 way there and supposed to be updated soon as well, that leaves the Challenger as the only classic looking muscle car on the market.  What's wrong with that?

So if anybody knows Chryslers plans and can share them, thanks in advance for the info!

From what I've seen the new cuda will be very close to its roots. Also the Avenger is going away and being replaced by a mid size Rear wheel drive plateform

Its been a while, but the pictures I've seen of the possible new Barracuda were all over the map, and most weren't that retro.  Has some more information been released in the last few months?  I would love it if it were to be very E Body like in its lines!

I think it was scrapped. Ma mopar is struggling, they are putting all their performance chips into the viper at this point. I highly doubt that a cuda sees the light of day. When the challenger was on the drawing board, it hit the media and went viral. So did the new Camaro, 2014 corvette, and next gen mustang. It is little more than wishful thinking at this point.

I wanted to see it as much as the next guy, but I'm facing the facts. Plymouth was killed, srt is too busy with other models and Chrysler doesn't have the capital to put into a new model.

Is this something you're fairly sure about and if so why?  Again, just trying to nail down a timeline for availability of the current Challenger if anyone can help with that along with any possible updates coming to the current car, etc.

Thanks, jim

Ralph Giles recently said that the are getting the Cuda as a model for SRT, if anything it seems SRT division is one of the most well funded divisions. Also, by moving the model to the speciality brand of SRT, Dodges average for CAFE and EPA standards goes up.

I went home on R&R early this month for 15 days, and came very close to trading my truck in on a SRT8 Challenger.  Besides everyone at the Dodge dealership being too in your face, pushy, arrogant, and irritating the main reason I didn't pull the trigger was because of the possibility of a new Barracuda.  I greatly wish some more info would surface on both the new Barracuda and the prospective renderings of the new Challenger.

I agree, and like the new Challenger how it is, and greatly hope they don't make it more modern.  As far as the Barracuda goes, its too much of a mystery.  I haven't heard any new news about it since late last year, and google the topic pretty often.  If it is that futuristic blue car that is rendered I don't know if I could buy into it.  I like the body lines but hate the front of the car and the rear.  Others look like someone altered a picture of a new camaro, and they are decent when considering the 70's look greatly similar to 1st Gen Camaro's.

All in all I haven't heard any news about the new Barracuda getting scrapped, and am still under the impression that they will be coming out alongside the Challenger.  I hope this is the case so I can make my decision while they are both available new.

I'm sure if any new evidence of either car come to light it will be all over CC forums.  I'm like a eager little kid, that cant wait for a surprise.

I think Challenger will be dead by 2015, and make way for the Barracuda.

Info on the Cuda:

The blue car is actually a Motor Trend artist computer rendering.

Looks like we're all in the same boat waiting for something concrete regarding either updates to the current Challenger or the roll out of a new Barracuda.  It wouldn't hurt for Chrysler to clue in its most supportive fans such as those here so we don't go elsewhere.  During the 80's & 90's when Mopar wasn't selling a V8 RWD manual trans muscle car, I bought a new z28, new Trans Am, & nearly new Corvette.  It would be nice to at least know Mother Mopar's plans for the next 12-24 months which is when I'm thinking of buying new.....

Thanks for posting that video!

So in Summary:

Cuda - Not happening anytime soon, rumors got a little out of hand.  Waiting for its own platform as they dont want a rebodied challenger.
Challenger - Currently undergoing new development.  Expect some new updates, packages, etc to be released in a year to help compete with the mustangs' and camaros' new offerings
