Front dash 4X10 speaker to replace OEM speaker needed...
« on: March 27, 2013 - 06:09:25 PM »
OK, guys, here I am begging for help again.

I installed my factory Chrysler Solid State AM radio.  The speaker in my dash is factory and it still works but the paper cone is really worn/torn etc.  What I need is a 4X10 speaker that will fit in the same hole/space and is 8-10 ohm impedance.  I have seen the two smaller speaker setups in the 4X10 frame.  I am looking for a single speaker that will plug into an otherwise factory setup.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I have seen those on a few web sites.  Those look a little wide in the picture.  Have you used one and how well will they fit?

I believe someone out there "re-cones" originals.  I think Burdar used them for his restoration.  Might want to drop him a PM.

I went ahead and ordered a speaker from Herb's back on March 28th.  I still have not received anything from them.  Has anyone else had slow shipping experiences from Herb's?  This is the first time that I have ordered from them and it does not seem to be giving me a good first impression.

Considering the fact you ordered it the day before Easter, they probably didn't do anything about it until after the holiday which would have been April 2nd and today's the 13th.....I would think it will be in your mail box Monday...

However I live in Canada and I'm used to waiting WEEKS for parts not days, so my opinion is void :banghead:

I picked 5 speakers up from Herbs at Carlisle last year.

I found the 4X10 to be more of a universal speaker, and I had to cut some corners to get it to fit right.  Really expected it to fit better.

The 3 1/2" round speakers fit, but I think I had to make some minor adjustments to get one speaker to fit. If I recall, there was an interference with the dash frame and the magnet.

The rear 6X 9" fit perfectly.

I looked far and wide, but couldn't find anything better.  I think the best option would be to re-cone the originals.  But I read some negative experience on that front as well.

Seems you just can't beat NOS.

I guess that I am being a little impatient.  I just had a few days off and wanted to get this done before I had to go back to work.  Waiting a couple more days is not going to hurt me one way or another.

Yeah, just looking at the picture of the 4X10, it looks like I will have to trim the frame around the four side mount screw holes.

It would be great if you could just go to the auto parts store and buy NOS, but what fun would that be?  Right?  LOL

Yes, Herbs sells the exact same speaker and even copy and pasted the same description.

They sell generic speakers at your local Advance Auto that might be smaller speaker but they have the backets to fit your opening $10-$25.  But keep in mind they are cheap and not sure about the sound quality.

I got mine from:

http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm

It sounds fantastic, and i don't have to trim the dash fram to fit a large, modern magnet speaker!
