 :iagree:

The old 340 with 3:23s went 140 on an old country road back in the day with no problem so I would
have to think a HEMI would go 170 if set up correctly ;)

I'm thinking a 833 OD with 2:73 gears a nice big fuel pump and metering block
Safe tires, lowered front and back

couldn't be too good for it though :ack:

Using a final drive formula with 3.23`s and a 28" tall tire you could hit 170 at about 6600 rpm so it is within the limits of a good engine.Handling at that speed in an old stock Mopar would be a little scary!  :eekbig:

i dont think you would have to do all that to the car to get it to do 170 mph. a stock 426 hemi challenger with 28"tires could do it like "torredcuda" said. i am sure you could do it stock with 28"tires. no diffrent gear ratio. justs 3.23 would do it . because i have been over 160 mph in a 1970 440 six pax cuda with 3.23 gears.

if you are wandering way i asked if it could do 170 mph and then answer my own qustion later is because yesterday i did 160 mph in a 1970 440 six pax cuda on a empty road with a relly long stright away. the cuda had a 3.23:1 gear ratio and 28"tires so iam sure a 426 hemi could do 170 mph.

The one I had in 70 with 4.10 gears would top out around 140-145 . it had a little more left but not much. But I had a 70 440-6pak with 2.76 gears that would go 160-165 and better. Never took it faster cuz it didnt want to steer at those speeds.....LOL

My dad bought a '70 hemi challenger right before he went away to college in '70.  The car had 4.10 gears with a 727.  He said although the top speed was only in the 140's, it would get there in a hurry!

Welcome to the site Mopar is King!  Where the in crap do you live that you can do 160?!?!  :o

the top speed of hemi e bodys stock trim
                                                                      gear ratio
             4.10:1= 139 mph
             3.23:1=166 mph
             2.94:1=174 mph

but with 28" and at 6600 rpm numbers can be 4 mph more 4.10:1=143 mph
                                                                                               3.23:1=170 mph
                                                                                               2.94:1=178 mph

you guys think 170 mph would be to high for a 426 hemi. and the top speed would be around 140-145 mph because that is not very fast a vw touareg i heard can do 135 mph. my 340 aar cuda has barred the needle at 150 mph and i dont think a 340 aar is faster than a 426 hemi car.

Look at the frontal area and the A pillar angle of any B or E body Mopar. That's like pushing a brick through the air. Aerodynamics became very important in the late 60s as engine technology  grew in leaps and bounds. The wall they hit was that more horsepower wasn't making the cars go faster. The law of diminishing returns. So the air cheating shapes came into play. now you are here trying to compare a design that has 35 years of aero technology over a B or E body? Of  course its no competition. And also remember that the 426 or 440 is only turning over mid 6K rpms as opposed to the stratosphere the bangers of today are. Hollow valves, overhead cams, super thin low tension rings, 300cfm flowing heads - these were race only items when the Bs and Es were on the street.
But defy the wind a bit, put in those 2.76s and let's see where it falls. The step from Charger 500 to Daytona was an instant 12mph with no other modifications to driveline.
Yes Virginia, aerodynamics is the equalizer.

As a couple of you have already said, gearing is the factor.  If you have enough power, the relatively poor aero shape of the body can be over come.  I had a new '70 Cuda w/ 383 & 3.23 rear, & 140 was easily reached, but the roads around central Va back then were not conducive to holding such speeds for any duration, & especially not for higher speeds.  I am sure the car would have pulled 160 on level ground given just a little more room.  Roads are better here now, but traffic is much worse, & radar more plentiful as well.  The Nascar boys usually ran 2.76 or 2.93 gears behind the hemis at Daytona, & easily ran 200 on the straighaways w/ 4000+ lb cars that weren't real aero either.  The new "little" cars are much lower, narrower, & lighter than the old cars.  Whatever HP they are claiming for them, the do not compare w/ the actual output of the HP big block engines.  Just try one of their miracle 2 or 3 liter monsters in a '69 Polara & see what it does.  I was there for the "muscle car days".  If you weren't, then all you have is what some one tells you, & maybe they weren't there either.  It was a lot of fun, but a lot of guys didn't live through it.   Ovmf

I like to say first off that I think a Hemi E-Body in stock form would max out around 140 mark. Secondly I would like to know how you guys are coming up with the speed on your cars ??? PLEASE don't tell me that you are going off your stock speedometer. There is NO WAY they are correct at higher speeds. I use race a 67 GTX and in the quarter mile I was clocked at 114.64 mph but the speedometer was saying 135 mph. Especially in the 60's and 70's cars the technology just wasn't there. So unless you have a very accurate way of measuring your speed you really don't know how fast you are going.. I am sure you are all going over one hundred mph but to get a 60's or 70's car in street form to hit the 140's and 150's is a little far out there. Motors may have the power but --suspension--aerodynamics--and so on are a different story. PLEASE don't misunderstand me I am NOT KNOCKING anybody down but just wondering where these numbers are coming from ???????
Sorry if I have offended anyone.

as a stupid kid I would take the 71  340 R/T chally on the taconic parkway.  4 lane for 80 miles.

I used to down shift to 3rd at 90 mph the car would stand up and GO . killed a few 6.6 trans ams that way,
needle would be pinned to the reset past the STOCK speedo 150 hash mark and there would be no eagle
in sight.

God I wish I didn't wreck that car,  but I think it was inevitable at 16 in 1978  :banghead:
Why are the only other cars on the road all in my rear view mirror?  Oh yeah cause I got a 440/6 pack

Thank you GOD for the "Go Fast Division"

Hi guys, here's a little math for you.

If you assume there is no slippage in the driveline, then the rotational speed of the engine can be directly converted to the rotational speed of the tire, which, knowing the diameter of the tire, gives distance per revolution.  With some unit conversions, you can get speed from this.  Regardless of aerodynamics and horsepower, if your engine is spinning at a given rpm, and the transmission, clutch/torque converter, rear end, and tires are not slipping (a reasonable assumption, especially for a manual transmission) then there is only one speed you can possibly be going.  The equation that gives speed (in miles per hour) is this:

RPM*D*3.14/(T*R*1056) = Your Speed in MPH

Here is an example:

RPM=RPM (tach reading, like 6500)
T=Transmission gear ratio (whichever gear you are in, like 1.00 for top gear)
R= Rear end ratio (like 3.23)
D= Overall tire diameter in inches (like 28)

6500*28*3.14/(1*3.23*1056) = 167.55

So given this setup, your car will go 167.55 miles per hour at 6500 rpm.

The 3.14 in the equation is pi, as in circumference=pi*D
the 1056 is the lumped conversion factor that allows you to enter the numbers in all the convenient units, and have the speed come out in miles per hour and not inches per second or something like that.

MaxCuda, thanks for that formula!

I don't even have a working speedo in my Chally, and I now have a monster aftermarket tach covering it (strapped to the steering column) and have swapped my 14" 26" diameter tires for 28"r's, so now I can figure out speed, and avoid the tickets

much appreciated!
