Rebuilding 4 speed
« on: March 30, 2013 - 09:06:27 PM »
Anyone ever dive into a 4 speed and rebuild it, syncro's, bearings, seals, etc ? The kit from Classic seems to have everything in it for $260.
Am i wasting my money? I just dont want to put this transmission back into a restored car and then have to pull it.

Will a clutch fork from a small block work with my BB 440 setup?

I did my rebuild with a kit from Passon. Take it one step at a time and they are very easy to do.
Get a piece of 3/4" emt for loading the bearing rollers.

How long did it take you and what road blocks did you run into during the re assembly?

The clutch fork will work, it's the pivot that's different.

Rebuilding a 4-speed is pretty straight forward.  The only really special tools needed are the rear driveshaft yoke bushing driver and a tool to remove the reverse counter shaft so you can replace the o-ring on the shift lever.  I use a spark plug socket with a bolt and nut for this.

i checked out Passon site. Prices were half as much, however it listed 2 different kits, one for a small block A833 and a BB A833. I thought they were the same transmission? I think i will give them a call next week.  I appreciate the article from Mopar Muscle. I rebuilt a ford transmission 25 years ago, it wasnt too bad. I had to replace the syncros.

Thanks CG. That will save me some dough. i was going to replace the pivot studs anyway. The rebuild kits are not too badly priced.

I used kits from driveline suppliers , the kits were $150 range & include everything except the rear slip yolk bushing & speedo seals .
Different 833 use different size front brgs , 307 4.35" diameter retainer  or 308 with 4.8 or 5.2" there is a front brg retainer at the 4.8diameter but uses the smaller 307 fron tbrg so make sure what you have .

The only issue I had was purchasing good quality snap ring pliers. The ones I had were cheapies and the snap rings in the 833 are pretty stiff. Apart and back together time was one easy going day in the garage.
