ECS Gas Tank Needed If Going Electric Fuel Pump?

Hey lads, I'm currently doing research on mounting my Aeromotive fuel pump (500lbs/hour @ 45psi) to feed my 540 Hemi. My original #s matching engine was a 440 and it had the ECS fuel tank with the 4 hose separating system (picture below).

Question: When installing my new electric fuel pump setup, what happens to that 4 hose ECS system? Do I just remove and shlt-can it or run it like I did the 440? Is it required with an electric fuel pump? Do I need a non ECS fuel tank without the hoses inside? I just want it done right and done safe so any help is appreciated.

Thanks man (lol, "Carl"...not Carol haha) but yeah, I want this pump outside the tank (it's quite larger) is supposed ot be quiet and I'm not a huge fan of internal pumps just if things go wrong or need repairs, it's harder to repair. Those tanks by Rick sound nice. Aeromotive said if you have a stock tank, then a sump reservoir is required (if possible) and I see Rick does that. Time for more research haha....thanks for your input bud!

Haha, no worries mate, I found it funny and was just giving you grief lol.  :icon16:

That doesn't look too bad, but I'd still prefer an external pump. I'll be putting it on the frame rail, left side frame seems to be the spot most are doing the external pumps. I'll definitely do some more research and am never one to say never......haha, thanks again!

My  :2cents: The oem's have been doing it for years so you know it's safe, it's quieter and runs cooler.

If your worried about dropping the tank if the pump fails put an access panel in the trunk floor.

Hey Carl, long time to see/speak!
I left my ECS  stuff hooked up like in the picture you posted. I'm running a electric pump to feed a carb and welded a return bung/AN fitting to the fill tube.  This might give you some idea's about the sump reservoir if you want to use your stock tank?

I assume you need a return line so that woul dbe the big concern for me returning the fuel without airating the fuel near the pick up , as for the venting I would leave it alone through the ECS system

Hi Carl, long time no see!  Good to see that you are checking in every now and then.

I used my stock tank, and just got a sending unit with a with a 3/8” return line. I got mine from Napa.  I then mounted my fuel pump outside the tank (on the rail behind the tank).  I used the 5/8 inch line for the feed and the 3/8 line for the return.  I then ran a 5/8 line adjacent to the original line.  It works great, and you only hear the pump when you turn the key on to start the car.

Thanks for the info bud and everyone else, much appreciated! Some photos would be awesome if not too much trouble please. I have no issues running the 4 line ECS system which sounds like the best way to vent it (since it came that way and is already in place).

Another question: The Hemi I have has breather hole in the passengers side valve cover with no current breather yet and I have a valve on the drivers side with a hose running back to the rear intake. I'm not too sure what oil breather I need now. I was originally going to put in a tubeless push in style air filter (painted black) to vent crankcase pressure as there is NO other spots for a hose to run off it back to the air filter/intake area.

Looking at the 4 tube ECS diagram, one of those tubes runs back to the breather cap, so, should I run a breather cap with 1 hose outlet from the valve cover to the ECS system? Is that correct/safe or do I need a 2 outlet cap, 1 to the ECS and 1 to __________ ? Sorry for the newb style questions, just want this done right/safe is all.

Another question: In the sump instructions, it says if you're using a stock tank to install a sump reservoir? Is this really needed? They make it sound like all hell will break loose if you don't. Also, they say you need at least 1/2" vent, what do they mean? For reference, below is the parts list supplied by the engine builder that was supposed to by a complete EFI install kit.

I guess the tank could thoerically collapse inward if the fuel moves out too fast with a too small vent . The theory behind connecting the ECS to the breather is the PCV system will draw in the fumes through the engine & burn them off rather than letting them escape to the atmosphere . If you adda vent to the tank you want to drop the vent lower than the tank , god forbid in the cse of a roll over the tank would not empty on the ground increasing the risk of fire .
 A sump welded into the bottom of the tank at the rear provides to optimum place to draw fuel from without starvation while accerating but will be visable under the car .

Awesome, thanks Neil, it's making sense now. :2thumbs: Does my Hemi require a breather cap with 2 outlets on the valve cover or is my setup ok? It was shipped as it is in the photos to me by Tim Banning. Also, is there anyway to get around the 1/2 tank vent minimum? Doing more research, I found people saying you're not "supposed" to run the setups below half a tank which is kinda lame as I like my long road trips.  :-X


So to recap:

* Install the ECS as it was with the 4 tubes
* Run the vent line back to the breather using the 1 hose outlet breather
* Have a fabrication shop weld in a sump reservoir (below) bottom/rear of in the fuel tank
* Mount the fuel pump as per Aeromotives requirements with 2 in line filters, return line and #10 line


I think that's the main parts. Anything else anyone can think of?
