Bending neighborhood rules
« on: April 01, 2013 - 12:48:11 PM »
My neighborhood doesn't have many rules, which is probably a good thing. I have car parts in the driveway, my 72 Charger on a trailer in front of my house, a Duster behind the house and lots of other junk just laying around. The one rule they're pretty picky about is no sheds in front of the house. My garage is pretty cram packed right now so I can barely fit the Challenger in, let alone the Challenger and the Cuda when I get it back, so I need some  storage for heavy stuff that I use in the garage, but don't want to store there like my picker, wheel ramps, a couple of transmissions and other odds and ends.
I decided since I can have a shed I would build a cave on my driveway.

The plan is that when it's done it will look like a big rock with a removable door.
I did the frame out of 45 bucks worth of 3/8 rebar and I'll cover it with chicken wire and then fibreglass and either coat it in cement, or paint it to look like rock with gel coat and a few painting tricks I found on the internet.
My neighborhood is even ok with it since it's an ornament and not a shed.

Good luck with that . . . why not just put a regular shed in the rear yard?   :clueless:

I have one in the back for my cement mixer, lawn mower etc. This one is for stuff I only use in the garage so I want it close.
My driveway is pretty steep, and there's a long slope to get to the back of the house so it's tough getting heavy stuff back there without burning out

I love it when people get creative navigating the HOA minefield.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Seriously, that is really slick.    Can't have a shed,     build a rock.
Please post pics of the finished product.

What can they do anyway? Can they send you citations?

My neighborhood is pretty relaxed with rules. The only three they uphold are keeping lawns and empty lots grass cut, no sheds in front of the house and your fence can only go to the front of your house, not your lot.

I have a 73 Duster on blocks, a 72 Charger on a trailer, a Challenger sharing the garage with 4 engines and 4 transmissions, drive a pick up and have 5 dogs and own guns. Heck yeah I'm a redneck.

Started putting some hurricane fence around the bottom.

The fence works pretty well. It's flexible enough to bend around compound curves but stiff enough to give it some structural integrity. Once I cool off a little I'm going  to see if I can get the rest of the thing covered.

Hah!  This is too cool!  Can't wait to see the finished product!

I wish I could have neighborhood rules like you.  I had my Challenger covered in the driveway and seme dope (probably t a realestate agent selling the condo across the street.  She's a known trouble maker as I know her from other venues) reported it to the local code officer.  He wrote me a letter saying I had an unregistered vehicle/vehicle in disrepair on my property.  How could he tell if it was covered?  :swear:

Have fun with your project!

When I was living in Canaduh the bylaw enforcement guys used a helicopter to fly over the city of 30,000ish to snoop in back yards. Then they sent a letter saying that someone 'complained' about your back yard and if you didn't clean they would  do it and send you the bill.

Alot of the associations typically would need to approve that before a resident could build it.  Not sure it would pass in my area . . .

Now they just use google maps!  I was thinking about building a garage in the backyard and went to the city and when I didn't know the size of my house he just brought it up on the computer . At the time he aslo said that's a nice red Buick you have in the driveway! :sly:
