Transmission won't shift
« on: April 01, 2013 - 08:23:19 PM »
Rebuilt 2 years ago by a shop I was told is the best in our area. They should be for what they charged. Just drove the car this week and it won't shift until about 4500 rpm. Shifts good then, but beating the motor just to get in second gear, same thing to get in 3rd. Could this be in the linkage ajustment or the valve body? 727 auto.......Thanks

Sounds like the kickdown linkage is not adjusted right.

I hope! It was set up right down at the trans, but there is no spring on the rod at the carb. I know nothing about these, will the rod at the carb keep it from shifting?

Yes it will. The adjustment on the "kickdown rod" (wrong name), affects shift points. This rod actually controls line pressure. You can search this forum for proper adjustment. Please don't drive the car until you get it set closer.

I won't be driving it, that was hard on it. Are you talking about the rod down to the trans or the rod to the carb?

The 1 at the carb. There is a procedure you need to follow. Once you do that, you can drive it and fine tune it further if needed. If I remember correctly you also need a spring there. I have not messed with this for over 35 years, but I went through the same thing then, and I know you need to have this adjusted correctly. As I said search this forum or google the procedure. The info is out there or someone on here will help you. Sorry I can't help more. Good luck

Sounds like you don't have a spring holding the kickdown linkage against the throttle.  If that's the case, the kickdown is probably sitting at WOT and then the transmission won't shift until really high RPM.

You just nailed it! No spring and won't shift manually or auto until real high rpm. I'll get a spring on it. I still don't understand it, seems like when the throtle starts back it will take that rod with it spring or not, but I know what to do now. Thanks

I have a 904 and I have this exact same problem, car won't shift into third and I know there is no spring there. The previous owner wrapped some elctrical tape around the shifter linkage. Could you post a picture of how this spring hooks up? I don't care if it's a big block or not I just need a referance to give me an idea i can figure out the rest.

On a lot of mopars, with the lever actuated kickdown people will mistakenly run the throttle return spring to the carb stud instead of the slotted rod that that is part of the kickdown rod assembly. The kickdown lever on the transmission itself is spring loaded, but doesn't have the umph to return the heavy kickdown rod.

Detailed diagram.

http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/auto/35.html

I have reviewed the diagram and determined my linkage is not in any of those pictures. I have a 318, former 2 barrel now an edelbrock 1405 4 bbl, edelbrock alum intake and a904. Here is a picture, can you identify what is wrong? I fear I'm killing my trans as I have been driving it this way for a few years now.

Could you post another pic, that one is very blurry when I zoom in. Can't see the workings.
