T/A AAR question

Why didn't Mopar put 303's in the production AAR and T/As? I know it was a de-tuned 340, but Ferd has the Boss 302 and Cheby has the Z/28 and I think AMC even has a 303 so why didn't Ma Mopar?

If I'm not mistaken it wasn't a de-tuned 340, it was a de-stroked 340 that got its cubes down below the 305 ci limit, not sure why that motor didn't go in production cars, has to w a reason tho

why have a 305 when you can have a 340 maybe?

As with most things I would imagine it had to do with the bottom line - money. I would bet that for the actual race cars, the components (crank, rods and pistons) to destroke the motor down to 305 cubes were probably outsourced to somebody outside the company. For the production cars Chrysler would have had to create new tooling to create the necessary parts and that would cost money. There were no cube limits on selling the cars to the public, so they probably figured why spend the money if they didn't have to? They had already spent enough on the block, heads and induction system (In fact I'm surprised they actually put the special block and heads in the production cars. Thought that they would have just slapped the induction system on a standard 340) and probably didn't want to spend more to destroke the engine for the street? The extra cost would have ate into their profit margin or caused them to raise their price point above what they thought they could sell enough of the cars for. That's my guess

Like R 0 8 mentioned, cost.
They actually put the special block and heads with beefed up mains.
They may have had insight that owners would want to modify the engine.

As I recal Keith Black handled the stroker / de -stroker kits for the T/A race cars

I'd guess Chrysler was required by SCCA rules to put the special T/A blocks and heads into the cars to get those pieces cleared for actual racing.    SCCA rules were a mess and constantly changing, but hard to imagine Chrysler going to the extra effort and expense of putting the one-off T/A parts in the production cars unless that absolutely had to.
