Clarification on ZDDP oil additive

Am I correct in that ZDDP oil additive is necessary for ALL flat tappet lifters, whether they be solid/mechanical or hydraulic?   I ask because I have a MOPAR Purple Shaft Hydraulic Cam with Hydraulic flat tappet lifters and want to ensure the necessity of using a ZDDP additive.  (70 Cuda/miild street build 440)

If i do need ZDDP for hydraulic lifters, does Valvoline VR-1 have high enuf zinc levels or do I still need to add a ZDDP additive in addition to the VR-1?

Also, is 20/50 in the VR-1 too thick?  Should I use the VR-1 10/30 instead.

Yes,zddp is needed for ALL flat tappet cams. VR1 is a good oil to use with plenty of zddp in it already. 10-30
would be plenty for a mild build.

Thanks for the response.  Just want to make sure if I need the additive with the VR-1 or not.  Theres alot of mixed info. on this subject in this forum.

what is the rating on VR1 10-30 ?
 If it is SM or SN it has low ZDDP , the 20-50 oils often have the SL rating with higher zddp levels

Its funny you ask about the API Rating on the VR-1 10-30......The spec. sheet on the Valvoline web site does not provide an API Rating for the VR-1 10-30.  But the spec. sheet does show the same Zinc/Phosphorus levels in the 10-30 and 20-50.  I currently run the VR-1 20-50 but would like to switch to the 10-30 since Im reading that 20-50 is a little thick for a non-racing motor. 

As a result of all this I called Valvoline and talked to them about their VR-1 oil.  Valvoline assured me that with respect to the VR-1 Racing Oil there is the perfect amount of Zinc/Phosphorus in both the 10-30 and 20-50 for flat/solid lifters and if using either DOES NOT require additional ZDDP additives...running the oil alone is sufficient......and that applies to both regardless of the API rating.   So with that said I will be switching to the 10-30 in my 70 Cuda/440/4 speed.  Hopefully this helps clarify this subject for others as well since there is alot of varying info. on this subject on this forum.

  7Dcuda, thanks for that great information I also use Valvoline VR1 in my engines, 20-50 in the hot summer months, 10-30 in the cooler winter months.

look at the bottom table under 20-50.  It should be fine unless you have super stiff valve springs
