Hemi motors, where to buy?

So I have been poking around the idea of a Hemi, I'm still looking for one. Where is the best place to get a crate Hemi? And what are they worth?

The biggest issue we are having is NO blocks at this time. Chrysler is not playing nice with the caster so they arent producing any blocks currently.

as for a crate engine, what version and size are you looking at?

Indy has Alum blocks I would assume ?
FBO is one option , Dave may know some other good builders .
cost can go over 30k

Gen II or Gen III?

What's your budget?

GenII, you can get a cheap iron-headed crate for maybe $12k (like on e-bay).

Or get a dual EFI 540 or 572 world-block w/stage V heads and roller cam and the works for maybe $30k.

got word from Chrysler today that we should have blocks with in the next 3 weeks, with a "minor" price increase so they say.

Or how about Stage V Engineering's Hemi Head conversion for a 440 block?? Relatively affordable (compared to other Hemi options) and they apparently bolt right up to a 440 block and can use stock Hemi intake and exhaust manifolds. Check out the accompanying Car Craft article - sounds pretty interesting.

Good luck finding headers that will fit.  Custom headers can run $1500-2500.

Machine work is some money too.

You'll be far ahead just getting a hemi block.  Resale value is great too.

That's if you're looking for a Gen II


It's really easy to end up 20K or more in these.
Roller rockers/roller lifters and aluminum heads = 7 grand after notching for clearance.

Wow this stuff can break the bank quick!

How much do original era hemis go to if you can find one? If I needed  to I can fab up my own headers that's not a issue for the 440 conversion but I think I would just go with a Hemi. My car is a 340 auto car. I believe the k member, engine harness will need to be changed? What else? Trans? Are the front end parts all the same?

Pretty sure you can get Hemi conversion mounts from say...Schumacher, to avoid having to get a k-frame:

Harness, sure.  Torsion bars and bigger sway bar, definitely to handle the increased weight.  I recommend at least getting a hemi w/aluminum heads/intake to shave some of that massive weight.

It all adds up.  A Gen II Hemi is mainly for hood propping appeal.  You can build a stroker 440 for way less money and the same HP/Torque pretty much.
